Protests in Los Angeles against the Trump administration’s immigration raids prompted President Donald Trump to federalize the California National Guard and to dispatch active-duty Marines. The topic dominates this week’s editorial cartoon gallery.

Walt Handelsman leads the gallery with his view of Trump contentedly dreaming about tanks rolling into L.A. Dana Summers sends up the notion that the protests were peaceful. Nick Anderson and Drew Sheneman point out the hypocrisy of Trump and his supporters urging force to put down the protest while excusing the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Nick Anderson comments on ICE’s pursuit of farmworkers. Phil Hands, Bill Bramhall and Anderson invoke imagery of Trump fueling the flames of discontent. Jack Ohman sees California Gov. Gavin Newsom as a beacon of democracy for pushing back, while Joey Weatherford infers that Newsom tolerates lawlessness.

Cartoonists also poked fun at Trump’s military parade Saturday in Washington, D.C., which happens to be his birthday. Mike Luckovich’s president misinterprets a protest as a parade. Ohman draws authoritarianism in the shape of Marilyn Monroe, who famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy.

Other news events in this week’s batch of editorial cartoons include the falling out between Elon Musk and Trump; health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr.’s firing of a vaccine advisory panel; and the death of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
