New number plate fails to boost March car sales

  1. Not sure what number plates can do to fix the chip shortage. There’s a huge backlog at the moment with waiting times for some models nearly 12 months.

  2. peoples obsessions with number plates is just sad, whether that be having the current newest plate, or personalised ones. Both scream ‘more money than sense’

  3. Im not sure people care that much anymore, also having to wait months for your car to be delivered because of chip shortages makes it pointless.

  4. Oh no!

    Anyway…

All joking aside I think people are more bothered about their electric bills and the price of petrol to be fannying about ‘buying’ new cars (buying in inverted commas as we all know they’re being acquired on the never-never).

Or maybe the idiots have cottoned on to the fact that brand new cars lose ten grand+ the moment they roll off the forecourt and you can get a car that’s still within MOT-free zone for vastly less than a brand new one.

  5. It’s pretty hard to build cars given the current chip shortage and the waiting lists are ridiculous. Lockdowns in China have impacted key supplies within the past year, so some brands were having to offer an IOU on the second key when handing over to customers. One brand relies on a part that is only made in Ukraine (I want to say it’s either BMW or Audi, but I may be misremembering). There’s a lot more at play than cost here.

What worries me most is the reliance on the motor industry in the UK for jobs, whether you’re in a dealership, working the track or making parts for the cars themselves. It’s already been a difficult few years for those of us who are employed in it, and it doesn’t look like it’s easing up quite yet. We desperately need investment in areas such as the West Midlands to diversify the employment opportunities if this is going to keep on the way it is.
