The Moldovan State Hydrometeorological Service (SHS) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in hydrometeorology, climate, and air quality. The event occurred during a workshop in Chisinau, which focused on strengthening hydrometeorological cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine.
The workshop was attended not only by representatives from the three countries but also by the Swedish and Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Services, as well as representatives of the European Union.
Aliona Rusnac, Secretary of State at the Moldovan Ministry of Environment, emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the shared challenges of climate change and environmental protection.
This cooperation is part of a two-year EU Twinning project, which began in 2024, aimed at accelerating environmental protection measures in the context of Moldova’s EU accession process.
During the discussions, participants reviewed the current state of hydrometeorological services in Moldova and Ukraine, identified strategic directions for joint development, and outlined options for technical and institutional support from northern partners. Specific agreements were also made regarding cooperation in weather forecasting, air quality monitoring and climate change adaptation.
The workshop was supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland through the Ukraine–Finland Meteorological Project.
