Have I Got Newts For You

  1. It’s definitely newt season as my children have discovered. The pond is teeming with them and I’ve now been tasked with researching how to make our garden/pond more newt friendly.

  2. Always think of Monty Python when I hear about a newt.

    ‘I got better’

  3. They like Veronica Beccabunga to wrap their eggs up within the leaves. There’s a few plants leaves they like, but that’s a favourite, so I hear.

Some different heights of growth around the pond, and evergreen for year round cover, plus rockeries, woodpiles or other things they can hide under would be much appreciated by them too. They spend relatively little time in the pond throughout the year, conditions allowing.

They can roam a lot – some species more than others. Careful when cutting your grass!

Oh, and don’t keep fish in the same pond. Very unlikely any future little ones will live if you do.

Last edit: I’m jealous! Haven’t had any in my ponds that I’ve seen for over twenty years now. Enjoy!

  4. You need a Hislope on the sides of your Pool (Merton).

Oh, is that a door, I’ll see myself out.

  5. I was told water mint was good for the eggs, we’ve got loads of newts too, the mint has kind of ben overwhelmed by other plants but it doesn’t seem to have bothered them. Plenty of rocks and things to hide in – an watch out, I’ve dug them out of the soil accidentally in winter, they just bury themselves and hibernate in all sorts of spots. Our kids have loved having newts. Enjoy!
