The Brits are at it again

  1. I get his sentiment but I can see why it’s a bit ignorant too.

That said, it would be better phrased if he used the word ‘again’ and also with the word ‘modern’. But what Russia is doing would be the same if Britain decided to, in 2022, invade via Cork, Dublin and down from the North and totally blitz our cities.

  2. Imagine a country forcibly occupying another to protect what it views as it’s own ethnic group there.
Or using gerrymandered elections to defend its occupation of another country.

  3. The Brits did this exact thing, we know, but it’s still a good parallel for what is happening in Ukraine and a good reminder to the Clare Daly tankies in this sub repeating Lavrov / Putin talking points eg ‘Well, Ukraine does have Russian speaking areas, so. . .’

  4. I’m not sure if this guy is ignoring the past or he’s just stupid. But it is a good comparison to help both brits and irish understand what Russia is doing.

  5. Hmmmm like the cunts haven’t tried that before…. A lot of English don’t know there fucking history

  6. Nick is literally describing history. Statue of Kilkenny, “To Hell or To Connacht”; the Ulster Plantation, the Penal Laws, the Famine. Hundreds of years and dozens of instances of the UK doing exactly what Nick is describing.

  7. I’ve been making this analogy too. Let’s keep it in the 20th century at least for comparison.
It would be like if ,at the outset of the Troubles, Britain invaded this whole island and leveled Cork , Dublin , Limerick and Galway to the ground whilst raping and ethnic cleansing along the way.
They wouldn’t have been allowed to do this. Not saying the Empire wasn’t genocidal in Ireland , just not recently.

  8. This… kinda makes sense.

Ireland was at one point “part of the UK” and then we broke away. Similarly, Ukraine was part of USSR and broke away.

So the analagy holds, from the point of a country invading a smaller country that it once “owned”.

  9. This poor guy. He campaigned against brexit, is against tax havens, is a progressive, and in another tweet criticizes Clare Daly by asking if she would side with the imperial aggressor who decimated Ireland (ie the UK, he seems well aware of history).

But hey, he’s just earned the ire of /r/Ireland because of one tweet he threw together probably for his home audience to get them to wake up.

  10. I think a lot of people are missing that the tweeter is pointing out that the British did exactly that…

  11. Not sure what the issue here is, the parallels are undeniable.

The British oversaw the great hunger, the Russians oversaw Holodomor in Ukraine.

The British oversaw the plantations, and enforced British language, tried to eradicate Irish culture, the Soviets did the same in Ukraine, trying to enforce Russian as the main language, and eradicating the idea of a Ukrainian nationality.

The difference is that Britain isn’t invading Ireland today. It’s an apt comparison, he’s saying “look, wouldn’t it be horrible if Britain started invading Ireland? Like how fucked up would that be? That’s basically what the Russians are doing”.

Honestly, I think people in this thread are the ones ignorant of history, otherwise you all would have seen the parallels between Irish history and Ukrainian history, and how for the Ukrainians, this is as if we got invaded by the British AGAIN today.

  12. A Brit on Reddit today told me that killing Irish people in Ballymurphy and Bloody Sunday wasn’t murder because Irish people are subhuman.

    They’re never not at it.

  13. Hes just doing the same skit Sahsa Baron Cohen did about American democracy and dictatorships. Its satire folks.

  14. he has a point though, if you imagine them doing it now, not in the past.

We would be out asking for help too just like we did when we were under british rule.

That is worth considering when you hear clare and mick say we shouldn’t help ukraine because it’s Nato’s fault or it might mean dead invaders.

  15. Was this meant be ironic ? Or are they retarded. Only if I could imagine the brits did all of those things exactly how you described them 🙄.
