Optimism from Cyprus and the EU
“They expressed optimism about concluding the India-EU free trade agreement by the end of the year, which would also give a major boost to trade and economic cooperation between the two countries,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in an official statement.
Talks Gathering Speed After Years of Delay
Negotiations between India and the EU, ongoing for nearly two decades, have recently gathered momentum. According to India’s chief negotiator L. Satya Srinivas, the frequency of talks has increased, with the next round scheduled for July 7.
“There are some tracks we are working together on. Momentum has picked up in the talks and the frequency of meetings has gone up. Earlier, negotiating rounds were held every quarter, but now we have reduced the time between rounds,” Srinivas said.
The proposed FTA covers 23 chapters, including key areas such as gender equality and sustainability. Both sides are now aiming for a comprehensive agreement by December, rather than a partial or early tranche by July.
Update on India-UK Deal
Meanwhile, Srinivas added that the India-UK trade agreement — which has been under negotiation for months — is nearly ready for signing, following recent progress.
Economic Corridor to Drive Regional Stability
Addressing the delayed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, PM Modi said the initiative holds great promise for enhancing regional stability and economic growth. The corridor, currently impacted by tensions in West Asia, is designed to improve trade and connectivity between India, the Middle East, and Europe.
In sum, India’s high-level diplomatic outreach in Cyprus underscored its strategic push to deepen trade ties with Europe and strengthen its role in reshaping global supply chains.
