The Homewood Science Center board is hoping to raise $50,000 at its annual Summer Fest fundraiser on July 17.

The event, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Idlewild Country Club in Flossmoor, is open to adults 21 and over.

A new addition to this year’s program will be a pre-event of pickleball from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the country club, which will be led by pickleball pros Rob Knox and David Matasar. Edie Dobrez, Homewood Science Center’s executive director, said there are only 24 spots available, and that all skill levels are welcome.

Dobrez promises an evening full of fun, where guests can enjoy food and music, and community. Sporty and casual summer attire is encouraged. Event highlights include two complimentary drink tickets and food stations, as well as an auction, she said.

The fundraiser supports free STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programming at the center, which has been in operation for nearly 10 years, and has served about 10,000 children annually, according to Dobrez.

The funds will support field trips and summer camps, plus internships. Funds will also be used to expand other programs, such as Math Magic, she said.

“At a time when federal funding is uncertain, individual and corporate donations ensure that we can continue providing high-quality, accessible science programming that inspires the next generation of innovators,” Dobrez said.

Summer Fest tickets can be purchased for $60 through July 4, and $75 after for entry to the regular event. Pickleball pre-event tickets give access to both the pre-event and regular event for $85 through July 4, and $100 if purchased after, she said.
