    Sir Keir Starmer, appearing to take a leaf from the Trump playbook, issued the threat to countries digging in over returns agreements as he warned of a “serious situation in relation to Channel crossings”. 

    “It is a serious challenge that requires serious responses to it,” he said, adding that he had discussed it with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Italian PM Giorgia Meloni at the G7 summit.

    “We are looking at issues like a smarter use of our visas,” the PM said. “Whether we should tie our visas to the work that the countries we’re dealing with are doing on preventative measures and on return agreements,” he added. 

    Starmer said this could result in fewer visa allocations for countries with no returns agreements. 

    “It would be much more sort of transactional, if you like,” he said. “We’re looking into it.”

    The PM also set out other proposals to his European counterparts during talks, including using counter terrorism-style sanctions to crack down on people-smuggling gangs.

  18. They have been saying all this for ages. They are just talking the talk to appease voters. They won’t do any of it. They talked about terror rules for smugglers when they got in power, they still are taking about it. Meanwhile 1000 illegals a day

  20. Ironically this could lead to even more illegal immigrants from those countries, as removal of legal ways to enter ours could result in more people doing it illegally simply from having no other option.
