Iran is seriously considering closing the strategic Strait of Hormuz • FRANCE 24 English

the straight of Homus is one of the most vital shipping arteries in the world stretching just 55 km between Iran and Oman a fifth of the world’s oil and gas pass through this narrow waterway some 18 to 19 million barrels a day due to its economic importance the strait has often been a hot spot for geopolitical tensions with Iran repeatedly threatening its closure over the years but any blockade of the trade route would spell significant consequences for Iran such a move would almost certainly invoke retaliation from the United States which has naval military assets in the region it would also complicate Iran’s access to commercial goods and risk alienating Iran’s foreign partners like China which import significant amounts of Iranian oil the closure of the Strait of Homus would also be bad news for the world economy global oil prices would spike and Europe could face energy shortages especially in countries dependent on Middle Eastern fuel it would also disrupt industries across Europe including manufacturing transport and agriculture but also delay imports of raw materials and consumer goods but analysts say that closing such a key shipping route would be near impossible under international law as a UN convention stipulates that Homo is an international straight where the right of transit cannot be suspended

  1. Under UN? You mean the very organization that is now being defunded by US? International law? What international law?

  2. How many of those who had commented along the line "close the strait",
come from those regions that would be negatively impacted and how many come from maybe OPEC nations that would welcome higher oil prices?

  3. The threat to close it is a desperate measure by Iran to save face after their humiliation by Israel. But if Iran tries to close the Strait of Hormuz, they will suffer more, lose their navy like how they lost their nuclear facilities and control of their airspace.

  4. In that case petrol can reach even €5 per litre and food prices and transport fare will skyrocket. Europeans must protest against war in the Middle East

  5. This report is not accurate at all and there has been no reports of them saying anything to this extent. In the past they may have said something like that but they have not made any claims at this time to have any sort of desire like this.

  6. Everyone acting like both sides haven't contributed to this 65 year old conflict. Both have antagonized the other with every opportunity.

  7. Iran is considering closing the Straight of Hormuz? Mess with the international flow of oil and see how that works out. Maybe they could just put a bunch of "Iranian Ships Only" signs out while they are at it.
