NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Tennessee lawmaker is trying to prevent an underground tunnel to Nashville’s airport.
Tennessee officials have been in talks with Elon Musk’s company on potentially building it.
The proposed tunnel would be between five and ten miles long and connect BNA to Downtown.
But Democratic representative, Aftyn Behn has started a petition on Change.org to block the project.
The petition already has hundreds of signatures and highlights the concerns officials are negotiating behind closed doors without community input.
Here are instructions on how to watch WSMV4 live on various platforms.
“Elon Musk is an absolute grifter and scammer,” Behn said. “He has ongoing deals and pitches to cities across the country in which those promises have been unfulfilled.”
Behn said similar tunnel projects in other cities have either failed or were criticized for being costly, underwhelming and inaccessible.
“He wants to see his empire grow in this city,” Behn said. “And Nashvillians are saying, ‘No, we don’t want Musk anywhere near Nashville.”
Behn said Tennessee lawmakers should instead focus on fixing state roads, increasing transit and fast-tracking a light rail system.
Travelers at BNA said the tunnel could be a good idea to bring here; they would just need more details.
