  1. Not even remotely surprised.

Also that post is a great indication of the mentality of the lads organizing this.

Instead of thanking the people that did come in & trying to drum some more support with a positive message?
“thanks to everyone who showed up today, we’re really banking on the publics support so we can show the government in one voice how determined the people of Ireland are. It’s not too late to join the protest!” ?

    No..
They choose to berate their supporters, blame them for a pisspoor organised event & then try to guilt them into backing them up.

Literally the only people who would see that post are people who supported the cause initially. Berating those same people as a tactic to get further support?

It’s a bold strategy Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for them.

  2. Does this people have any clue about how free market and economy works?

If a country is not self sufficient in oil, it doesn’t have too much to do about petrol prices. The government will never lower the taxation because it needs the money to maintain the roads, the police, and so on. Also, the oil companies will never lower their profit margin because people keep buying petrol and diesel no matter the price.

So… people should be protesting about the lack of efficient public transportation.

  3. Still managed to destroy a days business for many outlets. Loads of my department stayed home today. All the local shops, delis and cafes are Grand Canal Dock are empty. Same in the city centre.

  4. It’s almost like the global free market economy, the very cornerstone of our society, won’t adapt to some irish truck drivers.

  5. I haven’t looked at where their social media support was coming from, but was it a lot of people with pirate flags and names like “Turlough O’Flaherty” with strong views on immigrants and obscure regions of Russia who start posting at 9am St Petersburg time? I suspect I know what the issue might be.

  6. “Getting banned off the road” sounds like more work and opportunities for the truck drivers off working today not wasting time at a facebook protest

  7. Another prime example of why some people need to stop thinking what happens on the internet is an indication of what the majority thinks, majority of any country’s population don’t comment online so when you see groups of people talking about an issue, Odds are the majority don’t care.

  8. The media acted the prick on this IMO. They gave a huge amount of coverage to a group that is effectively totally anonymous and has no authority to represent anyone.

Obviously that doesn’t totally preclude reporting or whatever but there have been more articles about it than people who turned up by the looks of it. You have to have some commitment to responsible journalism when giving a platform to these kinds of groups and that seems to have been totally absent in the last week.

  9. I don’t like high petrol prices, but there is not some irish petrol company gouging everyone who can just go “ah yeah fair enough actually, I didn’t realise that many people cared enough to show up, I’ll knock down that pure unnecessary 1000% markup to something in the low triple digits for yous. I was just acting the maggot and chancing my arm for some cash.”

Stuff happens in the world that Ireland has no control over that causes the changes in petrol prices for most countries. Its just such a weird thing to “protest” against. I get its affects everyone and its an easy target in terms of making the average person care about it, but whats does it achieve? Short of globally restructuring the petrol market to be some kind of highly regulated, subsidized socialist affair, there is nothing that will result in the kind of situation where the government or anyone has that kind of direct control over the price of petrol and can respond to the needs of the people when they are feeling the squeeze.

  10. Are these the crowd that posted a list of meet up locations for 3am?

Are they mental like? You’d want to be seriously dedicated to a cause to be getting up that early.

Not even Ted got up that early to do surveillance on Pat Mustard for goodness sake!

  11. It’s like the Tommy Tiernan bit.. ‘revolution starts tonight!’ ‘Oh yeah… I’ll be there.. I’d say…’

  12. I was worried the alt right crowd would try steal the thunder/crowd but even the fash didn’t bother to show up…

  13. Shit! I used the bicycle today, my bad – Are you still protesting tomorrow? I’ll bring the 18 wheeler in? Yeah?
