The United States military alliance with Israel during their June 2025 aerial operations in Iran marks a major transformation in Middle Eastern political dynamics, while the Trump administration takes significant risks. The escalating statements of President Donald Trump about Iran’s “unconditional surrender,” together with his attacks on Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have expanded this conflict from a bilateral matter to a possible regional war.

The initial phase of the conflict showed Israel’s impressive military dominance as they destroyed Iran’s missile capabilities and killed Revolutionary Guards intelligence chief Mohammed Kazemi along with other senior figures, but air power alone proved insufficient to damage deeply buried nuclear facilities like Fordow, thus requiring American involvement. More than thirty American aerial refueling tankers now operate from European bases, and B-2 stealth bombers stand ready to perform massive “bunker-buster” GBU-57 bomb strikes, which transform the entire conflict dynamics. This paper demonstrates that Trump’s decision to support Israel’s campaign might temporarily damage Iranian nuclear facilities, yet it misjudges Iran’s ability to counterattack asymmetrically while ignoring the devastating humanitarian effects and the potential for widespread warfare with worldwide economic impacts without a defined plan for Iran to surrender, which Iran has already rejected.

The operational landscape preceding U.S. involvement revealed both Israeli strengths and persistent limitations. Satellite imagery showed Iranian military infrastructure suffered extensive damage since the destruction of the Tabriz missile complex and the destruction of a tanker aircraft at Mashhad airfield, and the targeting of vital centrifuge production sites needed for Iran’s nuclear program.  Israeli officials announced “complete air superiority” through electronic warfare combined with precise strikes and alleged Mossad-operated sabotage, which disabled Iran’s defensive and offensive systems 5. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared this dominance a “game-changer,” enabling continued strikes with minimal risk to Israeli pilots. Yet, beneath this confident narrative lay stark vulnerabilities. The United States had no military means to penetrate Iran’s Fordow nuclear site protected by mountains while maintaining high-intensity operations across extended regions. Former Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz implied the United States had more power than Israel when he made public comments that “The United States is much stronger than us” and “It has capabilities that we don’t possess.” This statement indicated his request for direct U.S. involvement in the conflict. The U.S. transition from its initial caution about nuclear talks to explicit military posturing gave Israel a strategic advantage but trapped America in an intensifying war.

The decision of Trump to apply excessive force seems to target Iranian surrender but fails to recognize the Iranian regime’s proven resistance and potential to unleash destructive counterattacks. Iran’s warnings have been unequivocal. Supreme Leader Khamenei announced in a broadcast that U.S. military interference would lead to irreparable damage, before Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei confirmed that U.S. involvement would trigger a complete war.

These are not empty threats. Iran maintains various channels to launch counterattacks that include mining the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route, drone and missile strikes against U.S. bases across the Middle East, and activating its proxy forces throughout Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. The regime has maintained large missile stockpiles and proven its intent to strike Israeli civilians through the launch of 400 missiles, which killed 24 Israeli civilians and  The internal disputes within the U.S. government demonstrate how dangerous the situation is because hawks want Fordow strikes, but other administration members fear these actions will start a catastrophic escalation that may destroy Trump’s presidency. Iranian leader Hassan Rouhani revealed that surrender was not an option because such a move would destroy both sides, according to analyst Ellie Geranmayeh.

The human expenses and strategic inconsistencies of Trump’s dangerous gamble demonstrate why his approach remains completely unsustainable. The ongoing war damages civilians throughout both combatant zones. The people of Tehran escape to Lavasan through overcrowded roads because Israel has announced evacuation zones for particular areas of the capital before launching attacks on military forces stationed in cities. Arezou described the deep sense of dread that has captured the entire city while expressing her hostility toward the situation. My friend lost her house in Tehran to an attack, which resulted in an injury to her brother. They are civilians… We face this cost because the government decided to attack us even though we have nothing to do with their actions.  The Israeli population faces siren alerts and needs to stay in shelters, while Tamar Weiss from Ramat Gan demonstrates her panic while holding her baby daughter. Iran prevents journalists from showing the full extent of human casualties because the government restricts both public recording of war events and fuel distribution. Trump’s social media posts about unconditional surrender following his momentary consideration of Khamenei’s location left no diplomatic escape for Iran. The Iranian government has cut off all diplomatic channels because it refuses to negotiate while its territory remains under attack.  The conflict remains without direction because Trump lacks a defined political objective, while analysts prove that air power cannot achieve regime change alone due to Iran’s persistent resilience after leadership removals 27. Iran’s ambassador made it clear that the enrichment program for peaceful purposes will continue even if the country loses its nuclear sites.

The Iranian regime proves more resilient than Trump anticipates in his high-stakes bid to achieve an immediate and decisive victory. The short-term destruction of Iran’s nuclear program through U.S. strategic assets and Israel’s air power may occur, yet this success comes with the activation of the very regional crisis Washington tries to prevent. This escalation has produced massive human suffering in both Tehran and Tel Aviv, and the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure while threatening U.S. military personnel and global petroleum supplies demonstrates its disastrous consequences. The ongoing diplomatic deadlock between Trump and Iran forms a dangerous cycle since both leaders show no signs of giving up their fundamental positions. As German Chancellor Friedrich Merz pointed out, Israel performs the world’s dirty work against Iran, but American involvement turns this into an American war, which threatens to consume the region and the rest of Trump’s presidency in an endless and destructive conflict with no peaceful solution. The alarms in Tehran and Tel Aviv serve as a warning that the world stands dangerously close to entering a broader conflict.
