“Car fully charged, but still standing: should ‘charging station hoggers’ be fined?”

  1. So instead of tackling the underlying issue, which is clearly too few charging spots for EV’s, they’ll focus on the resulting symptoms. Sounds about right.

  2. Yes. Everybody should run outside to repark their car, after the car texts them to pick them up.

  3. So if i drive my car at the train station plug it in there then take an hour long train to work, what am i supposed to do? A quick back and forth during my break to unplug my car?

  4. Or in other words: pay a parking fee like for any other public parking spot…

Way should my tax money go to free parking for a select part of the population?

  5. So what if you live in the city centre and the closest charging spot is 1 km away? You need to walk or bike there to just move it?

You are already paying *overcharging” costs if the car is full.

Not everyone can afford a private charger…

  6. Im using an hybrid car since last January and so far, I haven’t found any free -free as not ocuppied, not free of charge- (and working) charger. It is ridiculous the lack of chargers in Antwerpen

  7. The thing I’ve seen also is EVs parking on a charging spot but not charging!
Anywho, I personally also do not always remove my car instantly when it is full simply because I might not be nearby

  8. Just make it so the charging station start draining your battery again if you’ve been there for too long. Problem solved.

  9. Companies that offer electric company cars should have chargers available in the car park at work. It would solve this problem, and also the problem of employees who live in rental/multi-dwelling properties, with zero option of installing a charger at home.

Depending on location, this may be a big ask though.

  10. In Ghent I saw this shit happening quite often. If anyone parks their car for hours in a public space while “charging”, then yes, they should be fined without a doubt.

It is like parking your car at a petrol station and leaving to do your stuff for the rest of the day/night.

  11. I’m so happy my boss didn’t force me to get an electric car. (I will be in 2026 though I hope these problems are solved by then).

  12. After reaching full capacity, give a reasonable (eg 15 minutes) grace period. Go over that and charge them double or even triple per minute what it costs to use a normal parking spot.

  13. The problem is not that people take a charge spot when not charging. The problem is that other people willing to charge at that time can not. – I propose that a car who has done charging after a grace period keeps accumulating a virtual charge during that time. If during that time an other user shows up and indicates the would like to charge that virtual charge amount becomes an actual charge fee. And awarded to the other users account as a credit. – This way the person charging does not know of the actually will need to pay extra if they overstay . Maybe the will be lucky. Uncertainty is annoying. – This way there is no need to pay for enforcement. The person directly affected gets a compensation. – But also the person who is charging and keeps the car longer then needed charging but does not bother anyone because other charging spots at that station are free does not need to be punished also.

  14. In certain EVs you can set a time you want your car to be fully charged to take off some strain on the battery. That would make it possible to park a full day on those spots anyway.

  15. Put QR code on charger, let charger message you when car is done or when the 3 hour time limit is over. We already do this for parking meters so why not do the same?

Ah but doesn’t your car have this as a service in the app? Yes, if I pay the yearly subscription it will do that.

Oh, but what about the card company? Nope, refuses to work with a card managed by a company. Yep I’ve reported it. A year later still no fix.

Good thing I live in a small town and can see the spots from my flat. If I’m the only one there I just use camera zoom to check the indicator light from a distance. If someone else has taken the other spot I go by the max 3 hours limit (takes nearly 4 to fill the battery up).

Thing is, say that both spots were super busy here and I wanted to get a partial charge in. How am I supposed to know when it’ll be finished? That would help too, if after hooking it up it would tell you that it’ll take X time. Neither the car nor the charger do this. I get that it would be subjective but if you showed someone it would take about an hour they could prepare and then they get a message so they can act. That’d be so handy. And then it would be fair to fine people. But right now you’re kinda blind.

And also yes, more chargers please 🙏
