What a bizarre way to target religious minorities. If the goal really was animal welfare why hyperfocus on the last 20 seconds of an animal’s life, and mandate a super shitty solution that is really plausibly worse?
It’s almost as if this has nothing to do with the animals involved, and everything to do with reinforcing bullshit stereotypes about Jews and Muslims.
I really don’t understand how people can be so angry about unstunned slaughter and still eat meat? You do know your koteletten are not born packaged, right?

According to dhabīḥah an animal must be alive at the time of slaughter to be halal. In one cut the wind pipe and all arteries must be cut and basmalah must be said. For muslims it is no problem if the animal is stunned at the time of slaughter.
Jews.
They follow shechita and while very similar to dhabīḥah, shechita not only requires the animal to be alive, it is also clearly stated that it is forbidden for the animal to be stunned.
So the problem for Jews is easy, they’re just plain against it. Any legally slaughtered meat in Belgium is terefah and not kosher. Their fight is hopeless.
So they import meat from where it’s still allowed. And let’s assume for any korban they want to perform they take an airplane far away to slaughter an animal and not that they perform illegal korban in their jewish neighbourhoods where they dictate the law instead of our own government.
But why some muslims be mad.
Animals are stunned with standards that make sure they are stunned rather than not stunned if there is an outlier. This causes that all animals will always be stunned but also some will die from the stunning.
Their problem is not that it has become forced that the animal is stunned first, but that in turn there hasn’t come legislation that also makes sure the animal didn’t die from stunning and then gets processed as halal. They are ok with the new law itself but they want it to be further add upon.
If the law passes though, watch the Jewish community pull the “World War II perdecution card” again.
Maddening how this still needs to be a discussion in this day and age.
Everyone these days is so full about inclusion. Same rights for all ethnicities and lgbtq communities
Meanwhile we still have to argue about wether we want to lessen animal suffering asap or not.
