>The SNP Government has promised not to cut the Adult Disability Payment (ADP) after Labour published its plans to slash welfare.
>Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the Scottish Government “will not let disabled people down or cast them aside”.
…
>The UK Government’s bill will tighten the criteria for personal independence payment (PIP) as well as cut the sickness-related element of universal credit (UC) and delay access to those aged 22 and over.
>The vast majority of people in Scotland on sickness benefits are on the devolved ADP rather than PIP. But the cuts mean Scotland is likely to be have less money available.
>Somerville added: “The UK Government’s proposed reforms will be hugely damaging to those who rely on social security support, particularly during the ongoing cost of living crisis. These plans have yet to be passed at Westminster, so there is still time for the UK Government to step back from this damaging policy and I strongly urge them to scrap their harmful proposals.
>“The UK Government’s own analysis highlights how the proposals will push 250,000 more people across the UK into poverty – including 50,000 children. With around half of all children in poverty in Scotland living in a household with a disabled person, the changes threaten to undermine the progress that we are making to reduce child poverty, and the work of the UK Government’s Child Poverty Taskforce.
>“That the UK Government is prioritising deep cuts to disabled people’s support is made even worse by their failure to abolish the two-child limit, which is estimated to have pushed more than 35,000 children into poverty since July last year.”
Wonder what else will be cut, or stretched thinner
When likely would these cuts kick in?
I totally agree with not cutting it. The bar to receive adp is already incredibly high with many disabled ppl who dont work due to disability unable to claim. Also, as this money is often going to people who will spend it- it stimulates the economy.
Things like this are why I’ll still hold my nose and vote SNP if I can’t vote for a good leftist party. They’re centrist wet wipes but fuck me, it’s better than him down south
Is it really that difficult to get benefits? It’s a genuine question as it seems really easy from the outside looking in but I don’t have to go through the process.
A handful of examples here are “anxiety” can’t possibly work because it makes them anxious. They get £900 a month and live with their parents.
The thing is they aren’t too anxious to go to concerts, out for fast food or travelling. Just too anxious to work.
I think we have included the scope of disabled to include a ton of made up stuff that allows the workshy to thrive while putting up barriers for people with actual disabilities who need all the support they can get.
“The SNP Government” haha, love how it still absolutely breaks some heads to jutt say “The Scottish Government”
Yes it’s difficult. My brother actually had 2 assessors out to the house to go through his claim even after full evidence from his care team. He doesn’t even get that much, he’s not even claiming the max.
