Zviedris was supported by 78 members of parliament, with six members of the For Stability! faction voting against him.
On Thursday, Zviedris acknowledged on Latvian Television’s programme Morning Panorama that he is aware of the high level of responsibility that comes with this position, while also acknowledging that there are several risks.
“For example, the uncertainty surrounding IT systems – whether they will be ready in time or not. One of the first priorities will be to understand whether they work. Another priority will be to communicate clearly and openly with local government election commissions and to talk openly about all the uncomfortable issues,” said Zviedris.
Zviedris has headed the Rīga Election Commission since 16 December 2020, having previously served as a member of the commission. Before his election as head of the commission, he was head of the Territorial Maintenance Department of the Riga Northern Executive Directorate.
In accordance with the law, the CVK consists of nine members. The chairperson and seven members of the election commission are elected by the Saeima, while one member is elected by the Supreme Court in its plenary session from among its judges.
