Why is Spain doing better than Portugal?

Lol

  2. Adding to all the reasons you mentioned I would also add that Spain has more natural resources and they are closer to central Europe not only geographically but more importantly logistically – they invested in the high speed rail system heavily subsidized with EU funds which Portugal didn’t. Not because we didn’t have access to those funds but because we were more interested in debating it ad infinitum until the opportunity was finally gone. This would obviously have GDP repercussions. If you look at an european high speed rail map you’ll see what I mean. I would also venture to say the spanish government is less bureaucratized, corrupt, centralized and more dynamic. I don’t know much about Spain but I have my suspicions as to why and how their social and fiscal policies are better but I’m not sufficiently informed to comment on it and it would be mere speculation on my part.

  4. > Portugal is one of the most corrupt Western European countries.

  6. Spain was pretty much always doing better than Portugal. Both nonetheless behind the rest of Western Europe due to the delayed industrial revolution, which was even more ineffective and delayed in Portugal. Plus, Portugal mass education was always far behind most of Europe.
