Denmark, which will hold the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2025, has reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was announced by Denmark’s Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre, according to Reuters.
“Unfortunately, Hungary is blocking, and we are trying to put as much pressure on them as possible, as well as doing everything we can to ensure Ukraine continues the necessary reform work.”

She also noted that Denmark is ready to quickly close the negotiation chapters on accession as soon as the process is unblocked.

Additionally, Denmark intends to reach an agreement among countries regarding the EU’s planned climate goals for 2040.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán firmly opposes providing military aid to Ukraine from NATO and the EU, claiming that Ukraine’s EU membership would negatively impact Hungarian farmers and the economy as a whole.
It was recently revealed that the European Union is considering separating the accession applications of Moldova and Ukraine.
Hungary has been blocking the opening of negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s EU accession since early 2025, stating that “Ukraine’s membership in the EU will be a burden both for the bloc and for Hungary.”
Ukraine’s Minister of Justice, Olga Stefanishyna, described the statements about opening negotiations only with Moldova as unconstructive during consultations with Hungary.
On April 30, the European Union Ambassador to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova, stated that the EU is currently not considering separating the accession processes of Ukraine and Moldova. The European Commission hopes for the simultaneous opening of negotiation clusters for both countries.
