RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) – June is National Cancer Survivors Month. It’s a time to celebrate life after cancer.
WKYT spoke with a breast cancer survivor who said her journey taught her a lot, like being her own advocate and chasing her entrepreneurial dream.
“I’m so proud to be able to say I’m a survivor,” said breast cancer survivor & Owner of Stephens Cookie Co., Mickey Stephens.
Nearly three years ago, Stephens went for her routine mammogram. Her results came back normal.
“We went from everything’s fine to, you know, something doesn’t feel right.”
Just two weeks after her mammogram, Stephens said she felt like something wasn’t right.
“It was a series of meetings with the surgeon to see what is going on.”
It was like every turn brought her to a different destination. Until one day, doctors gave her the shocking diagnosis.
“I didn’t even have a history of breast cancer in my family.”
Luckily, Stephens’ breast cancer was caught early. She had two lumpectomies and was cancer-free prior to undergoing chemo and radiation.
“Life after cancer is different.”
Stephens’ ‘different life’ became oh, so beautiful.
“When you go through something like that, it kind of pushes you to start doing those things you keep thinking about,” said Stephens. “‘Maybe I’m going to do this or maybe I’m going to do that.’”
Now, Stephens owns and operates Stephens Cookie Co.
“When I’m in there, I’m usually in the zone.”
Stephens is whipping up batches, taking orders, and bringing smiles to sweets lovers near and far.
“This is literally something I prayed about because I knew I wanted to do something, but I didn’t know what.”
During this National Cancer Survivors Month, Stephens says it’s important to remember nothing is guaranteed in this life.
“Take time to enjoy life. I thank God for just the flowers. I mean you just see things different, so to all my survivor friends ‘you got this!”
