Following the commissioning of the floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) Excelsior, the platform delivered natural gas to Europe for the first time, according to a June 19 announcement from pipeline manufacturer Strohm.
The FSRU Excelsior is part of the Wilhelmshaven 2 terminal, with a planned capacity of up to 445 MMcf/d of natural gas. The facility is about 1 mile off Germany’s coast and is the country’s third LNG regasification facility. The German government-owned company Deutsche Energy Terminal owns all three platforms and is building a fourth.
Strohm connected the platforms using its thermoplastic composite pipe system, a first for Europe. The pipe is lightweight and corrosion-resistant and was installed in a high-current zone, Strohm said in its announcement.
The platform terminal will be used to import LNG during its initial phase. The pipelines will eventually be converted to carry liquid CO2 at a later date, according to Strohm.
