why did you decide that these four patriots were not worthy enough to have their names on a base well Senator as you know this was never about the names of the bases they were renamed to so you challenge bases restoring all bases to their original names were not about erasing okay you wanted to you don’t care about their military record you wanted to restore the Confederate names when you called the Greg family to tell them that you were their dad’s name was no longer going to be on the base what was their reaction um Senator the Army notified them of that you You didn’t call any of the families and I’ve spoken with the families and the families were called by the press that’s how they learned about this they learned about it from the press you didn’t call the Barfoot family the Greg family and you didn’t call the Adams family i told the families I’d ask you about this today in fact two of General Greg’s granddaughters Avery and Sydney are right here in the audience and I want to ask you this as I close while you announced that these brave men and women’s names would be stripped from the Virginia bases no orders to that effect have been received by the base commanders in light of the patriotic service of Van Baroot Arthur Greg Charity Adams and Mary Walker I’d like to ask you simply not to issue the orders changing the names of these Virginia bases these families my Commonwealth are very proud of these heroes very satisfied with these names and asked you not to change them will you honor these exemplary patriots and keep their worthy names in places on the bases they loved and where they served well Senator we very much thank and appreciate them for their service and we’ll find ways to recognize them but the orders will soon be going to those bases to change the names back to the original name that never should have been changed but for you have

While testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended his decision to restore the names of military bases that were originally named after Confederate leaders.
Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., slammed Hegseth for not calling the families of relatives of the change.

  8. Why can’t we just be governed by children? I’d prefer children, they’d have the empathy to change their mind about changing it. My nana has a son and grandson who served and her dumb@$$ won’t say nothing or pay attention. Her daughter also passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning when my aunt was 17, I’d LOVE to see how she’d feel if her daughters name was stripped from something if they had decided to honor her

  14. I love how everyone here wants to dig on Hegseth when the Biden appointed Secretary Of Defense always looked like he wanted to take a nap during a meeting. How competent was the last Secretary of Defense when military recruitment was at an all time low AND when he disastrously withdrew our military forces in Afghanistan? If Hegseth is so incompetent than why is military recruiting at an all time high?

  27. The erasure of Black veteran achievements from the DoD website and curriculum for recruits is far worse than this. Hegseth is slick and smart enough to hold his own in these hearings. He comes across as well spoken and fairly earnest. But the truth is he is NOT earnest and in fact, he's a coward with poor character.

  29. Not about erasing history? Then why are you changing history so your feelings aren't hurt about slavery and the systemic racism after?
