‘Donation’ is the word used to avoid paying any taxes. Maybe you should’ve included more details like where, what you ate, rate place and food.
Simples. Three fiddy.
American style feel good nonsense.
I went to a restaurant in Hammersmith this week which had no prices on their lunch menu of small plates and large plates. Waiter gave me a range of what it was likely to cost. Then when I asked for the bill, received no actual bill, was just told an amount and had the card machine thrust in my face. Good food but I’ve got trust issues.
Just seems awkward to me.
I like restaurants with live music band…
i still have a coin bag full of one and two pence somewhere
I went there once and paid £30 including a couple drinks. We were sat in the shop opposite the main venue. Quirky but fun and food was good
Is “baking done today” at a slight angle? This is ruining my eyes, is it just me? It’s not straight, is it?
Google reviews are mixed
Sounds like the place is used for money laundering. With no fixed prices on dishes they can flow any amount of cash through the business and have no proof of revenue per dish to show.
If you do this to me youre getting a tenner. Trying to make me feel awkward gets the opposite reaction
Shit is so millennial-coded. We will never die ass gimmick.
Anyone ever gone, “well, here’s 50p mate” and fronted it out? I mean, they can put pressure on but I guess thats it?
Nothing like a post like this to bring out all the cheapskates who are for some reason proud of being absolute tightarses
1p it is then, Sir.
I went to a comedy show that had free tickets a couple of years ago, and they open the show saying “we rely solely on optional donations so we hope you enjoy the show!”
But at the end, they block the exit with a bucket and a card machine and interrogate you for not paying at least 15 pounds as you walk out. Some guy had a large bouncer/thug calling him ungrateful and spineless for walking past, when he was trying to let them know his wife was behind him and was going to pay for both of them on their shared account.
Needless to say I will never go to that place again
This could be very confusing and anxiety-inducing for neurodiverse people who expect a stated price.
Where is it?
If it serves 2 portions what if you only want one?
I’m more confused about the 1 plate = 2 portions part? Feel free to explain.
everyone on this sub is so terrified suspicious of everything loool why do you all live here???
Well yeah you guys are British, you can’t handle anything that requires active decision making. You’d rather just be awkward about it.
Eat the food, enjoy (or don’t) the food, compare it to a price point you’ve paid before and pay that.
It is agonising how severe you people are about things 😂
Think it’s a tax thing, they can say any payment is donation. So when some people are drunk/rich and overpay whilst most underpay it’s fine
Wasn’t there a ‘pay what you like’ place opposite a main station in london. The owners were very idealistic.
Sadly it didn’t last long.
this website [https://thenudge.com/london-bars/dalston-jazz-bar/](https://thenudge.com/london-bars/dalston-jazz-bar/) says *The food is served on a pay-what-you-want basis, with a base donation of £20pp for 3 courses.* which seems interesting if it doesnt mention that on the menu itself at all!
