Colum Eastwood has said he is considering entering the race to become the next president of Ireland.

The MP for Foyle resigned as leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party in October 2024.

He said people had asked him to consider standing.

"I'm considering it because people have asked and we'll see where it goes," he said.

"There's very few candidates in the field right now. It's something that needs a lot of consideration.

"I'm going to take the time to think about it, but it's a long summer and there's enough to be getting on with before any decisions around that would have to be made.

The election has to be held before 11 November.

Incumbent President Michael D Higgins is not eligible to stand again as he will have completed two full seven-year terms.

    Yer ma doesn’t count, Colum.

  2. I saw him puffing on a Vape, one St. Patrick’s day in Moville.
I couldn’t in good faith vote for a “Vapist”.
    #”Smokers are Jokers”

  3. I’d say Conor McGregor has more of a chance than Colum Eastwood.

  4. I’m not sure even with the rampant West Britism which prevails in the Free State, that someone who sat in a foreign parliament would win the Presidency

  5. Probably couldn’t be any worse than the alternatives

  6. Doesn’t have the notoriety necessary for this in the 26 counties. Adams would be more likely to win it, and even then his chances would be slim enough.

  7. People have asked Colum Eastwood to run for President … have they fuck

  8. He’d have to get off the wall of derry for five minutes. I swear me must live on it.

  9. I once looked at him too long one day walking down Bedford St and he shot me back a face of absolute disgust, ha.

  10. “And are the people in the room with us right now, Colum?”

  11. Go on Colum and let the 26 counties show what they actually think of you.

    What an absolute balloon.

  12. I’m fairly certain the qualifications for president of Ireland don’t include sitting on social media throwing out insults to rival political parties all day every day. If that was a factor he’d be a shoo in for the role as it’s all he seems to do. It’s not though thankfully.
The man is utterly deluded if he thinks he has what it takes to be Uachatrán na hÉireann.

  13. If this conversation actually happened, I imagine it went something like this:

Some guy: “Here lad, why don’t you fuck off over the border and do fuck all down there for a change?”

Eastwood: “They want me to be President“

  14. I’m from Cork. I’m a post GFA baby. My understanding of Northern politics is minimal.

FF is a **centre right party**.

This man was the leader of the SDLP, I always assumed that the SDLP was what it said on the tin, a social democratic Labour Party.

Ie a party of the **left**-centre left.

    wtf is happening here?

If Colum wanted to run in the presidential election, wouldn’t he link himself to the SD-Lab-Green joint ticket?

  15. I’d prefer Colum to most of the other names I’ve heard to be fair

  16. As my Granny would have told me, as my biggest supporter…”och fuckin catch yourself on ye dopey wee cunt!!”

  17. Imagine being Colum Eastwood and thinking you could hold a candle to any of Higgins, McAleese or Robinson.

  18. I’m going to stand for it as when I told my friend about colum they said “sure you’d have more chance and youre a cunt”

  19. Not a hope in Jesus. No harm to him but he would be pissing into the wind.

  20. I’d start with a shave Colum, then see what happens from there.

  21. He’s a really decent bloke. Listens, tries to effect positive change. They could do far worse.
