Romanian President Nicușor Dan has announced his candidate for the position of prime minister. It is Ilie Bolojan, the leader of the Liberal Party. Nicușor Dan shared this information on his Facebook page.
Negotiations to form a new government began on June 9. Ilie Bolojan will now continue consultations with representatives of Romania’s parliamentary factions to discuss candidates for ministerial positions in his government.
The new government may include representatives from the center-left Social Democratic Party, the largest in the country, as well as Bolojan’s Liberal Party, the center-right Save Romania Union, and the ethnic Hungarian party UDMR.
“Romania is interested in having a government supported by a solid majority, and the parties understand this.”

On May 5, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu announced his resignation and the Social Democratic Party’s exit from the ruling coalition following the first round of the presidential elections. This was due to the coalition’s candidate failing to advance to the second round.
In December 2024, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the November elections. At that time, the pro-Russian candidate Călin Georgescu won the first round, but due to suspicions of Russian interference in the elections, he was barred from running.
The first round of the early presidential elections took place on May 4, 2025. The second round featured the far-right candidate George Simion (40.96% of the vote) from the “Alliance for the Union of Romanians” and the independent candidate, Bucharest’s mayor Nicușor Dan (20.99% of the vote).
The second round of the elections was held on May 18, resulting in Nicușor Dan’s victory with over 54% of the vote. His opponent Simion, who received over 46%, attempted to challenge the results in the Constitutional Court, but the court unanimously dismissed his claim as unfounded.
On May 26, Nicușor Dan was sworn in and officially became the president of Romania. Among his main priorities are the development of education, healthcare, justice, the economy, environmental protection, and foreign policy.
