Brilliant; common sense, for once, prevails. However what a mighty waste of resources and court time.
Interesting nugget:
… by law, “no entity other than the Central Bank or such persons as ordered by the Minister [for Finance] shall be obliged to accept more than 50 coins denominated in euro or in cent in a single transaction”.
“The children suffered embarrassment in the shop with locals present, and suffered embarrassment with their friends because of the incident”.
Nothing to do with the piss poor parenting on display of course.
Oh the parents knew exactly what they were at there, sending the kids in with that coinage and 2 days before Christmas place would have been rammed. I’m sure that ended up costing the supermarket anyway in defending itself.
Not sure how they thought the claim would go through with how flexible the staff were. I do feel quit bad for the kids though, not fair to send them in to do this
The only embarrassment cause here was by both parents. They knew exactly what they were doing and acted as such.
Sure they can pay their legal fees with the rest of the coins
Just go to the self service machines Thats where I get rid of me change
They should have gone to the self service till. Would have been grand
Always offended but never ashamed.
I do love to send my kids in shopping while I scratch my hole in the car outside.
Is paying in coins part of Traveller culture? How on earth did they try make that link to the court?
The kid must have a purse the size of a rucksack.
Cash you say…
Feeble try on from usual suspects
If the family involved don’t have to suffer any consequences it just encourages people to take stupid claims like this
Meanwhile the wishing fountain was now just a fountain
€68 in 10c & 20c coins, they must of found that down the back of the sofa,
And people wonder why certain community gets a bad rep…
Good. Services the parents right.
The amount of money and resources wasted on this complaint is probably ridiculous, the complainant should be liable to pay fees just like a civil court.
This should never have been allowed to go down the legal route, the WRC should not have entertained such an obviously cretinous allegation by the parents .
Absolute insanity to even attempt to bring a claim over that, so they were almost certainly just looking for a payout.
Two days before Christmas a supermarket would have been absolutely fucking rammed and expecting to be able to pay for €68.00 worth of goods with 10 and 20 cent coins in the middle of all of that is absolute insanity. If it was dead quiet during the middle of the week you could understand it perhaps.
I’ve been a longtime, ardent and outspoken supporter and defender of the traveling community. I’ve long said that the way Ireland has handled the traveling community will, in some ways, be looked back on with shame in the future.
… But as with many similar incidents: This has very little to do with them being travelers. They’re just ballbags acting the bollox.
A couple of lines in and it was obvious that the people involved were caravan enthusiasts. Such a waste of resources, and such disrespect to everyone who worked in the shop, and other customers.
The poor poor cashier. A nasty move by the parents but she handled it well. I can’t imagine the stress she’s been under since waiting for this to be resolved.
Gobshite wasting everyone’s time
Cashier was paid to be there for a shift. She should’ve pulled up a chair and slowly counted the coins. Even loosing track and having to start over.
The family should be sued for damages. The cashier will have months of anxiety about the upcoming case. She will have been interviewed by solicitors both the shops and the complainants. She will have had to present herself to the tribunal and be robustly/ ignorantly interrogated by the opposing council. The shopkeeper will have been at their wits end thinking they may lose their store and families income. The family bringing the complaint will have had their lawyers paid for and have nothing to lose financially but a slim chance of a win for a large payout. There is no comeback on them and they are never out of pocket or worried about the outcome of losing the case. Completely one sided. They should be made to recompense the cashier and the store for the crap they have put them through.
This was a really fucking stupid case, they were just chancing their arm.

Solicitor should have cut that one short.
