I’m not sure being beholden entirely to the french is that much better than being entirely beholden to the US. Plus Rafale just doesn’t meet the same sort of mission requirements that are fulfilled by something like the F-35. Airbus Germany is already looking for alternatives for the unmanned fighter jet project, which IMHO is the the most important aspect of FCAS anyway. Airbus has the lead on the unmanned aircraft, while Dassault has the lead on the manned fighter jet.
But now there are rumours that [Airbus Germany is going to cooperate with Saab (Sweden)](https://www.hartpunkt.de/bauen-schweden-und-deutschland-gemeinsam-ein-unbemanntes-kampfflugzeug/) to build an unmanned aircraft, independent of FCAS, as both countries need those type of unmanned aircraft ASAP to integrate them in their air-forces, to complement the Eurofighters and Gripen fleets.
Even if you have a finished product, you need years of training, need to find ways to coordinate attacks with unmanned drones – all of that takes a lot of time and time is running out.
If you are selling 4th Gen+ Rafale at a discount we’ll buy. But for now, as much as it pains me, we are buying F35s because there is no credible 5th gen alternative in Europe. Looking forward to the Anglo-Italo-Japanese Gen 6 though, if only they would compromise for something quicker than 2040 when we will already be occupied by Putin at the current pace of European rearmament. 🤷♂️

Rafales are 25 years old in design, but haven’t stopped evolving. Rafales were as great a the TGV when they first appeared, a tech few others followed.
it’s still the best multirole fighter available for it’s staggering cost.
It beats the F35 in training dogfights, in simulations and in real training, 90% of the time. — F-35 is 4 times heavier in air to air combat.
