Coventry Cathedral isn’t too shabby

  1. I’d like to see this. I’ve never been to Coventry, though I’ve been sent there a few times.

  2. No, it isn’t.

I love how they’ve kept the old one, to remind us of the war.

  3. It’s a true “marmite building”- you either love it or hate it. Modern architecture fans absolutely rave about it. It’s not my thing but I can at least appreciate the craftsmanship, unlike with a vast percentage of new art which is basically slop. On a sunny day the stained glass in the new cathedral is genuinely stunning.

  4. Wait…is this a…positive Reddit post about my hometown?!

  5. I went to Warwick for uni and naturally spent a lot of time in Coventry city centre and visited the cathedral many times. I love the massive steps into it. Very beautiful

I haven’t been back in a while but there used to be these big spherical concrete things just before the steps. We used to try to jump across them total wipeout style lol

  6. I was just saying yesterday how much I’d liked Coventry.

  7. Coventry Cathedral is beautiful, in my opinion. I was there a few years ago, just after the war in Ukraine had started. The organist was playing soaring, ecclesiastical music, sunlight poured through the stained glass, and I had a bit of a wobble. My wife thought I’d found God, but it turned out to be trapped wind.

  8. I’d like to visit one day.

    Thanks for sharing these.

  9. I loved the place the 3 times I’ve visited. The Sutherland afterpiece is magnificent. A reminder of a time when the UK wasn’t afraid to look forward into the future while still paying homage to the past rather than just back all the time.

  10. That chapel on the side. Looks like it was made by the Galactic Empire.

  12. I take it you’re talking about the upskirt stuff in pic 1??

  13. The best in the country and I’m from close to both Durham and York

  14. It was nice to see Coventry Cathedral gave a primary school a setting for their Nativity play and was OK for using a death slide from the spiral

  15. It’s cool: one of only 2 modern cathedrals in the UK I think. I’m not religious but liked the whole “Peace and Reconciliation” thing.

  16. Lovely cathedral IMO, unfortunately the bells are rather discordant, not so appealing.

  17. It’s a stunning design and a wonderful place to visit. The stained glass is beyond beautiful and the whole space exudes calm and peace.

Now I want to make the trip to attend Christmas Carols this December. 😊

  18. Mods, pull the post. They’ve got all these shots arounf the cathedral but he’s neglected to snap the devil’s dib dab and massive bollocks. Not even trying.

  19. Mid-20th C architechture gets a lot of stick, and let’s face it a lot of it just took the worst aspects of brutalism and tried to do everything as cheaply as possible.

When it’s good it’s incredible though, and the Coventry Cathedral restoration is a perfect example of that.

  20. I don’t know if it has a name and I can’t say it’s something I am an expert in but there is a noticeable style of architecture that you see in churches built in the post ww2 years. You see it here and in the second cathedral in Liverpool but I sometimes see it in postwar housing estates that have a small church I suppose if I had to call it anything ecclesiastical Brutalist

  21. Shudders at how much time I spent there drunk as a goose in my teens. Back when it was a free for all until they built Nando’s.
