Hi everyone,

I have a question about bringing prescription medication into Germany and would appreciate your advice.

I'm a Brazilian citizen moving to Germany for work soon. I need to bring my personal, continuous-use medication for asthma with me (to be clear, these are common asthma medications, not narcotics).

I know that I need a medical certificate from my doctor to justify this. In my research, I found the official ADAC form for this purpose ("Ärztliche Bescheinigung"). You can see it here: https://www.adac.de/gesundheit/gesund-unterwegs/flugzeug-schiff/medikamentenmitnahme/

Here's my dilemma, and I'd love to hear your thoughts:

On one hand, using this form seems like a great idea. It's a clear, well-structured format, it's multilingual (including German), and it carries the logo of a highly trusted German institution (ADAC). I imagine a customs officer would find it very convenient and credible.

On the other hand, I'm concerned it might look strange. As a Brazilian moving to Germany, am I the intended user of this form? I worry that an officer might question why I'm using a document designed for German residents traveling abroad.

So, my question is: Has anyone, especially other non-EU citizens, used this specific ADAC form when entering Germany? Would you recommend it, or is it safer to stick to a standard, official letter from my doctor in Brazil (written in English)?

Any personal experiences or advice would be incredibly helpful!

Thanks so much!

  1. Bring your prescription with you and that should be enough. I also have asthma medication and when I moved to Germany I brought some inhalers with me to cover my needs for a few months. You don’t need any special medical certificate or whatever, only the prescription just in case.

Eventually you will need to go to the doctor to get a new prescription in Germany so you can keep getting your medication.
