Venice locals plan to disrupt Amazon founder Bezos’ wedding • FRANCE 24 English

venice’s romantic streets and canals have long been a draw for visitors but as the tourist season really gets going one upcoming arrival in particular has sparked deep anger and a grassroots level protest against Jeff Bezos and his decision to hold his marriage in the Italian city unfurling a huge banner above the famed Piaza San Marco last week it underlined the collective’s message that the billionaire isn’t welcome and that no space for Bezos the collective’s name is a slogan spreading rapidly with exasperated inhabitants it’s going to be impossible to get around to live in this town that’s more and more being sold off to tourists stars and billionaires [Music] we’re not against them getting married but we young people are struggling every day in this city where it’s become impossible to find a place to live all it took was the ultimate billionaire and everything was easy for him rumors have swirled since news of the wedding broke with local media reporting luxury hotels booked out for guests along with a fleet of water taxis and the city’s famous gondilas all nonsense according to local authorities who are focused on a major incoming economic boost he’s someone who’s done great things on a global level we’re extremely proud i don’t know if he’ll have time to meet or shake hands but it’s an honor that he’s chosen Venice and we’re happy that he’s coming here with all of his friends the last time Venice saw major celebrity nuptules was when George and Damal Clooney tied the knot in 2014 with locals keenly remembering how the city was stuck at a standstill for several plays

For some cities around the world, tourism has become a double-edged sword, bringing in stimulus to the local economy – but often coring out local communities to the advantage of incoming visitors. And now the city of canals, Venice, has seen its waters futher troubled by the upcoming marriage of Amazon boss and billionnaire Jeff Bezos, with inhabitants furious over what they see as the privatisation of their home.

    To the Venice Mayor, you said he has done great things. How has he contributed to humanity with his money in comparison to the amount of damage he has done to humanity and the planet to amass his wealth?

  21. Amazon is contributing to the carbon footprint with the amount of plastics used to ship items and possibly other plastics. People buy things just to buy things it’s ridiculous.

  22. The community is worried about longevity for the young people to thrive where they live. The political side is worried about the temporary paycheck. I mean. Let the man get married there. But maybe they should have some protocol for keeping space for the locals to live, only so many houses can be sold to foreign millionaires and keep affordable housing for locals? If it's a true issue, they should work on something to protect the future of their citizens. But a wedding?? Just let him get married. Its just for a time. Not forever. He isn't buying every house from citizens so nobody else can live there.
