In Finland, border guards detained a man who, according to preliminary information, illegally crossed the border in the Parikkala area, which borders Russia. This information was released by the Finnish Border Guard, reports the local broadcaster Yle.

The incident occurred on June 20, Friday, near the settlement of Pitkyaranta. The offender was detected thanks to the technical surveillance system, after which he was quickly apprehended by the border patrol.

According to preliminary data, the man initially crossed the border into Russia and then returned back to Finland.

Border guards in southeastern Finland have already contacted their colleagues in the Vyborg area to clarify all the circumstances. A preliminary investigation is currently underway, and details have not yet been disclosed.

The situation at the border between Russia and Finland

In 2023, about 1,300 migrants from countries such as Syria and Somalia arrived via Russia at the Finnish border with the aim of applying for asylum. In response, Finland indefinitely closed all eight passenger crossing points on the border with Russia.

Russia denies any involvement in organizing migration flows and criticized Finland’s decision, considering it an expression of anti-Russian policy. After the border closure, the number of migrants attempting to enter Finland significantly decreased, but the border service emphasizes the importance of having a fence.
