Government ‘U-turns on plans to make flexible working a legal right’

  1. All we ever seem to get from this government is misery, hardship, and disappointment.

I just don’t understand how anyone can continue to support this shambles. Do people ***enjoy*** living in some sort of crushing dystopia?

Seriously, how can anyone still vote Tory? Even if you are rich. Shouldn’t we be striving to make society a happier, healthier, more productive place? Instead of this constant, depressing erosion of our well-being. I hope the Tories get absolutely crushed in 2024.

  2. All this government seems to do is announce something and then reverse the plan, often claiming the legislative docket is too full… but they never seem to actually pass any legislation. What they do vote on gets bounced back and changed by the Lords…

  3. At the end of the day it dosent matter. If companies can’t get the staff because they don’t offer flexible working, then the market should decide that they have to eventually offer it

  4. During the battle to win an agenda: “Yes yes of course we’ll do the thing you absolutely want us to do. It so obvious that this is what you deserve”

Once agenda has been won: “we’ve reviewed the thing you absolutely deserved and we said we’d do but have unfortunately been lobbied extensively by our corporate donors who suggest they would stop funding us if we did the thing. So as a result we’ve decided to contradict our previous commitment. In fact, we refuse to accept that we ever actually committed to the thing you claim you want, in the first place. But don’t worry, cause we (pick one:) get the job done / build back better / stay home and protect the NHS etc etc.”

  5. How many u-turns is this now from this government? 80 ish?
I remember when they used to be a bad thing, rather than party policy.

  6. The government’s plan all along, get out of the EU, then erode workers rights back to Victorian times with workhouses and sweatshop wages.

  7. So I’m following the charity that had been lobbying for this and they said it’s been delayed. Not the first time, it’s been delayed for 2 years now. They say it’s not a bad thing, as currently the bill doesn’t have all necessary amendments. So this gives them more time to lobby for more meaningful changes.

  8. I don’t understand why this is a shock or newsworthy. I’ve been told time and time again “we had a vote and.you Lost” so surely we should be celebrating this as the majority voted for Brexit which was a vote to lose all personal protections granted by the EU so we can more easily exploit our workers. Six years later this can’t be a surprise?

  9. You can’t possibly give more power to the employee than the employer now, can you – how would you force people into shitty jobs otherwise?

  10. Do you remember at the beginning of this government’s tenure, particularly when we were in lockdown 1, when we were adding up these U-turns and wondering, like, *how many more until this cabinet changes/resigns?*

Now I’ve genuinely lost count. We’ve had two just this past week with this and conversion therapy. It wouldn’t surprise me if the U-turns are up to a 3-digit number at this point.

What a gross government. May as well have elected a group of convicts.

  11. Why have flexible working when you can’t afford to live in your house anyway? At this point let’s just add a dormitory to every workplace so we never have to leave.

  12. Ahhh, finally – a benefit of Brexit!! /s

Here’s the start of the erosion of employment law.

Now, stop reading Reddit on a Sunday and get back to work. There’s a fiscal hole to fill, and those Tory pockets aren’t going to line themselves!

  13. I don’t know why anyone would expect any different. I called it back then with the “Obligatory Boris Says No” comment.

Downvoted by the Tory voters in this subreddit of course. So now let me leave another obligatory:

Obligatory Dragonball Abridged Quote: I hope somebody picks up that phone over there. Why?! Because I fucking CALLED ITTTTT!

  14. Given the amount of u-turns this government has done, we could power the country on the spinning around that they are doing.

  15. Government: We want more disabled people in work!

Also government: We will go back on the bill that might allow disabled people to work!

  16. Wonder which Tory MPs have taken money from some big corporations to change their minds. Bunch of corrupt fuckers
