If the offices refuse to invest in proper air con then yeah.
During the time when london was like 40+ i was working in an office where everyone had to wear formal wear, men had to be in 2 piece suits but formal wear for women is so varied that a skirt, sandals and a slightly formal looking white t-shirt is acceptable.
Was genuinely insufferable.
FFS this is long over due.
I work at home now so it doesn’t effect me but I’d champion anyone getting permission in they’re office.
An office in central London I worked had an couple of assholes running it (shame because most of the company was great).
I complained about having to wear shirt and trousers too work and said it made no sense that women could adjust to the heat but men couldn’t.
Got to the point I’d book a meeting with them straight after lunch, come on soaked through from a quick walk outside, to make a point that it was ridiculous to say it was more professional in front of clients (the excuse) given
1/ it was exceptionally rare wed have a client in anyway!
2/ did I really look more professional with a soaking shirt dripping sweat?
The assholes instead tightened up the women’s dress code!!
Kyriacos, if you’re taking this, fuck you
As long as they are nicely shaved, for sure.
Budgie smugglers FTW
When I worked for my local government we were in a middle of a heatwave, the women were turning up for work in sandals or flip flops with short skirts/shorts and string vests while the men were only allowed to wear a short sleave shirt, tie and trousers. I thought “fuck this” and turned up in black shorts and a short sleave shirt with no tie and flip flops.
At first management made some comments about how “inappropriate” it was until I pointed out that the women were wearing practically beach attire while at the SAME time turning off the fans and aircon because they were complaining they were cold while the men had to suffer. I told them to either sort out what the women were wearing or stop them turning of the air con and fans or I’ll continue to come to work in heat wave appropriate clothing.
It was never mentioned again and I was allowed to continue wearing shorts.
I really believe that shorts should be considered work attire in summer. I’m a woman but hate wearing skirts and dresses (wildly impractical, and it feels weird to have nothing between your pants and the world), and frankly men being allowed to wear shorts would mean I could wear shorts too, along with presumably lots of androgynous women who also feel uncomfortable in very feminine clothing.
As with most things, gendered bullshit being removed generally helps everyone in a roundabout kind of way, so I feel we should all be team men here and encourage the accepted use of shorts in summer, so that everyone has the ‘privilege’ of not roasting their extremities
I’m lucky enough to work in an industry that simply doesn’t care as long as you don’t look like you’ve simply come in some gym wear or straight from bed. So I can and have worn shorts to the office.
That being said, I don’t feel right having an external meeting in a pair of shorts. I’m talking going to someone’s office and presenting something or chatting with them. I don’t think I can take myself seriously. So it’s a purely self imposed rule. But as a result I own trousers made from material that’s not oppressive in the heat. I’m talking linen and open weave wool (sounds hot but it’s like a sack, full of little holes). Same thing with shirts, linen and 100% cotton only. Not as effective as shorts but still better than regular temperature clothing in the heat.
I genuinely think in this day and age, it really shouldn’t matter what someone wears in any corporate environment. Who fucking cares if you’ve got shorts and a t shirt or a suit and tie on when you’re buying some insurance or having a HR meeting??! I certainly don’t and anyone that does needs to grow up and see the person.
Same thing with tattoos and piercings. Who actually cares. Just don’t be having your bits out or look straight from the gym or bed, and you all good. Do your bits and take a little pride in your apprence.
Bosses don’t wear shorts
Needs to be done. Smart/office casual is still archaic bs.
I used to wear shorts at my old job all the time in the summer. OUr office was south facing, no ventilation or ac of any kind and would get reight fucking hot.
Boss went mental, said it was unprofessional and customers (on the phone) wouldn’t take us seriously. Next day, trousers as required, passed out from heat exhaustion by 1030 and signed off for 2 weeks. Shorts were allowed again.
