They’re complaining because of a loss of 11 car parking spaces, the poor dears.

>A total of 7,317 submissions were made on the proposal which would see the number of parking spaces in Lucan village reduced from 225 to 215 as part of a redesign of the village green.
Less than 1 per cent of the submissions were in favour of the scheme, with the vast majority of opposition “almost exclusively because of the proposed reduction in car parking spaces” the council said.
Oh for fuck’s sake. For shame Lucan. 10 fucking spaces.
I would be interested to know if these >7000 objections came from >7000 people, or 7 people objecting >1000 times each.
Planning system is fucked.
Jesus they must have some ground game to get that sort of engagement with a public consultation. Assuming these are legitimate, I’d love to know how they managed such mobilisation, especially if as the Lucan Village Business and Services Group say that “many thousands of unique written submissions”, rather than a load of form letters.

A lot of these I imagine was done by getting people at awkward times or be browbeating them into it.
The village needs a bit of work and these 11 spaces are often what causes a bit of buildup in the area. Also people can park literally two minutes at best either on the hill into the village or around by the embassy.
7000 complaints against the loss of 10 parking spaces, yeah that sounds about right for this country. No hope of proper development happening.
With a population the size of Waterford, maybe it’s time they stopped thinking of themselves as a village.
There is a huge problem with local business groups and residents associations being able to make any claims to whip up objections.
Our residents association recently sent around a newsletter about a new apartment development nearby. There were lots of factual inaccuracies and exaggerated claims in it. It whipped up enough of a frenzy that there are a hundred or so objections now
7000 objections, 3 minutes per email (making an assumption).. 350 people hours were lost making these objections, even though 95.5% of parking was left untouched
I’d recommend for people to watch Not Just Bikes. His [video about Autoluw](https://youtu.be/GlXNVnftaNs) touches on this topic of being more pedestrian-friendly.
“pedestrian wasteland” are they for real?!
What a depressing article. We haven’t a hope of transforming our towns and cities in the fight against climate change if we can’t even get rid of 11 parking spaces. Same with the salthill cycleway the other month.
Lucan village needs a revamp mostly cause the traffic sucks dick. The actual park and shops are nice but the traffic is a nussance.
Some nice car parks near ball alley or by the girls school would provide excellent means to walk into the village with minimal spaces needed inside the actual village.
Imagine if we could get this kind of mobilisation to write letters to the Minister for Housing about how shambolic the Housing Crisis is.
Oh sure, now its just 10 parking spaces, but who knows what the planners in SDCC have in mind!?!
Pedestrianisation!?
CYCLE LANES!?
A general reduction in car-centred design in villages dating from before the invention of cars entirely?
Remember, first they came for the parking spaces, and I did not speak out as I was not a parking space….
Does anyone have a link showing a map of what is planned? I grew up in Lucan and have always liked the village. There used to be horrible public toilets there years ago but the renovated the park and cleaned it up. I’d be interested to see where the amphitheater would go.
This is why I always maintain that the people are to blame and not the government. They are the reason this country is such a mess.
won’t somebody *please* think of the parking spaces?!? /s
This revamp rules, actually.
So when’s that decades overdue Luas line coming?
One complaint about removing parking spaces started with “I’m a kayaker….”
