Spotify’s launch of its free tier in South Korea last October has significantly grown its number of monthly active users there.

At least, that’s according to Chosun Biz, which reported that Spotify has overtaken local services Genie Music and Flo to become the third biggest music streamer in South Korea.

This is based on stats from Wise App suggesting that Spotify has nearly 3.6m MAUs in South Korea, ahead of Genie’s 2.6m and Flo’s 1.8m, and “closing the gap” on second-ranked Melon’s 6.5m user-base, as well as market leader YouTube Music’s 9.8m.

The news came as Spotify released some of its Loud & Clear data for South Korea, noting that Korean artists’ music was streamed more than 2bn times on its platform last year, with the US, Indonesia, Brazil, the Philippines and Mexico helping listening time grow to more than 9.7m hours.

Spotify has also just launched a new video-performance series with K-Pop artists, starting with Enhypen – the group that it recently created a physical pop-up for.
