A series of wildfires along Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, particularly affecting the Makarska Riviera, are under investigation as authorities suspect deliberate ignition.

Between June 21 and 23, wildfires were reported at 17 separate locations, with the largest blaze consuming an estimated 300 ha (740 acres) of pine forest, grassland, and low vegetation near the village of Pisak. This marks the largest wildfire incident in Dalmatia so far in 2025.

The fire broke out on the morning of June 21 in Pisak, located between Omiš and Brela, and spread rapidly to the neighboring settlements of Marušići and Mimice. Fanned by wind and difficult terrain, the blaze forced emergency services to evacuate residents and tourists, while also requiring the temporary closure of the Adriatic Highway (DC8) between Omiš and Makarska.

Damage assessments indicate that at least 12 houses and several vehicles were destroyed. A local oil mill in Marušići was also lost to the flames. Power outages were reported across Pisak and parts of Marušići. While no fatalities occurred, one firefighter sustained facial burns and was treated in a hospital in Split before being discharged.

The firefighting operation involved over 200 personnel at its peak, supported by 50 vehicles. 50 firefighters with 20 vehicles remained on duty as of June 23. Aerial support included four Canadair CL-415 aircraft and one Air Tractor AT-802. Ground units from the cities of Omiš, Kaštela, Makarska, and surrounding volunteer brigades were deployed.

Naval assistance played a significant role in the emergency response. Croatian Navy assault ships and inflatable boats were deployed alongside a Ministry of the Interior vessel and a civilian craft. These units evacuated 25 residents from Marušići. Additionally, 94 individuals, mostly tourists, were evacuated as a precaution and returned once the area was stabilized.

Police authorities, led by Deputy Chief Siniša Mihanović of the Split-Dalmatia Police Department, stated that at least one fire in the Makarska area was the result of arson. All 17 fires are being treated as deliberately set.

Increased patrols and surveillance are being conducted across the region, including analysis of CCTV and field reports.

As of June 23, the fire has been largely contained, though flare-ups continue to be monitored by on-site teams. The fire will only be declared extinguished once all personnel are withdrawn and smoldering is fully resolved.
