Slow? It kinda fizzled out around Cameron and the Brexit shitshow. As long as the bribe-happy criminals are scratching the backs of the mainstream media the population will continue to be brainwashed en masse to make sure the opposition has no chance.
Slow? Slow like a runaway train compared to a rocket perhaps.
Boris Johnson loves to think of himself as Britain’s next Churchill with the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine and COVID-19 bringing the times of crisis for him to fulfil this role. However, in response to Partygate (as well as every other shitty thing he’s done), I think it’s appropriate that she should be forced out of parliament with the same words used on Neville Chamberlain when he was kicked out. “In the name of God, go!”
It just goes to show how worthless and rotten the UK’s institutions truly are. Nothing of value was lost because it was never there to start with.
There are no consequences for anything, and anyone capable of creating consequences are the ones doing the bad things. It feels very simple, and like theres no chance of it changing anywhere in the world, ever again
It’s not erosion, it’s the natural consequence of a badly constructed political system. “Intellectuals” can pontificate all they like about a beautiful sacred democracy built over centuries being eroded by a few arseholes, but if all it takes for it to fall to pieces is a few arseholes then that’s a pretty shit system.
There’s no reason to not expect the Tory party to pull a Trump and fix the next election. They’re constant law breakers who are never held to account. Why wouldn’t they?
13 million votes is enough to give you a huge 80+ seat supermajority in Parliament… Some democracy that is, absolutely laughable. But that’s how many votes the Tories got in 2019. A minority of the vote allows you to have all the power, Where’s the democratic mandate?, Where’s the representation for the majority who didn’t vote Tory??… FPTP is not democracy. The UK is not a democracy, never has been with such a fundamentally undemocratic, primitive political system.
Council elections will be a decisive turning point.
Encourage people to vote. A vote for anyone but Tory will have a impact
I’m expecting Tories to be absolutely brutalised in the Council Elections.
Will be fun to see and may lose Boris some internal popularity.
Would just like to highlight that under the elections bill, which is currently being amended, this government is seeking to bring in mandatory voter ID. The original drafting of the bill would have disenfranchised over 2 million people in this country. An amendment from the house of lords will significantly reduce this number.
The question is why are the government introducing mandatory ID for when you vote?
Research has repeatedly shown Britain to have one of the lowest rates of voter fraud of any country in the world. This policy is projected to cost somewhere between £120,000,000 and £180,000,000 to implement over the next 10 years. To fix a problem that literally doesn’t exist.
Worst case scenario, I fear that if the Tories do terribly in the May elections (which they probably will) I fear they’re going to start banging the voter fraud drum, a la Trump.
Its not an erosion of democracy… That wording is wrong.
We have a democratic system (FPTP if shit and should go) but this isnt about democracy. This system hasnt changed for a long time (which again is a problem..) and aside from the standard gerrymandering theres jot a great deal of change.
We can’t conflate undesirable results with a ‘lack of democracy’.. whether we like it or not..brexit was a result a result of a democratic process (binding or not).. 12 years of Tories.. the result of a democratic process.. the rules and outcomes of which are clear and have remained clear… Even if not ideal.
**This is about abuse of power and privilege by those elected to govern with absolutely zero consequences**… We can choose to not elect bad people… But the UK public seem very happy with the Tory Cunts they keep voting in en-mass.
Well we’re just witnessing the Tories of Eton doing what they do best. Being the worst.
First Past The Post was barely Democracy to begin with…
The UK is turning into America with its Left vs Right facade of choice. Pointless tribalism for this bipartisan diluopoly of power.
We NEED Electoral Reform.
The thing that bothers me about the whole partygate narrative is how it’s effectively covered up the far more serious government crimes that happened over covid. The dodgy £37bn test a trace contract awarded to serco, the billions given to Tory party friends and family for dodgy covid testing contracts and ppe contracts.
It’s that huge amount of corruption and printing of billions of pounds just to give to their mates which has played a huge part in the high inflation numbers and cost of living crises we’re seeing now but it’s pushed out of the public consciousness over some cheese and wine parties. Imo it’s a far more serious crime that’s had a far greater impact on the public yet it’s not being talked about.
Between FPTP and blatant misinformation in the media I haven’t really considered this to be much of a democracy for a while.
The erosion of democracy is less about Partygate and more about cash for honours, cash for questions etc. These activities literally take the democratic power from the many and award it to the few. This has been happening, under different guises for years.
Partygate is about Ministers breaking their own laws & refusing to resign when caught lying. We have never had the democratic power to choose a Prime minister or Cabinets members. We do not have the power to oust them directly, only the 1922 committee can do this (for Conservatives). We have a semblance of power in who we vote for every 4-5 years, to put forward as our local representative. Therefore the vast majority of the Country (apart from his constituents in Uxbridge) have no say democratically in what Boris Johnstone says or does. Party leaders are often given “safe seats”, Uxbridge has always voted Tory.
So the issues around Partygate are about Ministers breaking the law with minimal consequence. It highlights that our system to admonish this type of behaviour in Parliament is based on honour. This may be fine until you have a Cabinet devoid of Honour.
Edit – just to be clear – “erosion” is where we have something and it is reduced. We have never had the power to do something about activities like “Partygate”. Therefore it is not an erosion but does highlight the limitations of our version of democratic Government.
Get rid of the Tories. Half of this problem can be solved by throwing them all out.
We have an unelected House of Lords. The UK has never been a true democracy.
The UK will never be a true democracy as long as:
1. We have a monarchy.
2. We have first-past-the-post.
3. We have unelected people representating us/themselves/businesses in the House of Lords.
4. Most of the media are controlled by egotistical billionaires who want to maintain their own wealth and power, but are believed by people who rely on them for accuracy and objectivity.
5. Politicians are paid by private corporations to advance their interests.
I think, given all that, the UK will never be a true democracy.
Democracy and the rule of law keep a lot of Tories alive when they otherwise wouldn’t be, I welcome their demise
Yeah, that’s been going on for fucking years. In fact, what even is democracy? The rich and powerful are always in charge.
Tbf, we’ve watched that happen since 2016 with remain voting mps and voters trying to reverse a democratic vote….
If you look at it from an outsiders view then you can see the same thing happening in the USA. The Hunter Biden laptop story and the Ukrainian Bio labs he was involved with just brushed under the carpet, Hilary Clinton lied about Trump being involved with Russia and got caught spying on his campaign. Just like the party gate scandal and now this deportation stuff to Rwanda (which seems abit strange), here it was all brushed under the carpet for some reason. Something is happening in global politics, I just can’t put my finger on what it is or where it is going but it doesn’t feel good.
I’m not a fan of any political party and I like to view everything from the middle but i genuinely can’t work out who the good guys are.
I get why we had MPs hundreds of years ago when we couldn’t get round the country in a few hours or send instantaneous messages through the air cause we needed someone in the capital to represent us as our voices couldn’t travel that far.
By now we should be replacing the fucking wastrels with an App
