We lost it during our war of independence. The Dutch wanted to keep it to be able to block the access to the arbour of Antwerpen.
Because the Dutch conquered it during the Eighty year war in 1604
Because it’s a strategically valuable region that was captured by I think Maurice of Orange to block shipping from the port of Antwerp which was still part of the Spanish Netherlands at the time.
Because it’s full of pfas
Because all we could get is an agreement on water discharge for the channel Gent Terneuzen with them and an agreement on using the scheldt for the port of antwerp … and we had to be ok with that hassle because of history
I don’t complain tho, especially now they’ve made the tunnel of Terneuzen free (looking at you, antwerp)
Wait until you see Castelré or Baarle-Nasseau
‘are they dumb?’
That’s a fucking good question !
Why doesn’t Belgium own Luxembourg as well?
Because the Brits didn´t want the Belgian army to take it (and parts of Dutch Limburg) after WW I.
It´s not a bad thing though. Zeeuws-Vlaanderen hasn´t suffered ruimtelijke wanorde like Belgium does.
They can start calling that water above it ‘Gulf of Belgium’
If you go visit the border you’ll get to realize why. There are a lot of traces left of the war that fixed that bit of the border.
Because Belgium had only enough frietjes to feed that many people. They ran out before they could convince them to our side.
That’s Sergio country.
Cause Nederlands didnt want lose it and let them keep control of the estuary’s Schelde
are you suggesting a special mititary operation of around let’s say … 3 days? Coincidentally, that’s also the amount of ammo Belgium currently has in stock…
I look at the world map and ask myself the same question
During the independance war we captured it but the english forced us to consolidate it to the dutch to stop the war. We actually had a much larger army that could have kept on fighting while the dutch were losing but the english wanted a quick resolution
we would be unstoppable with such a coastline, from de panne to antwerp with tram
It’s full of Dutch people.
Belgians *own* large part of it… it’s just not governed by them.
Time to start an invasion

They talk funny…
All I see is a land to annex.
I suggest the code name operation golden frite for this special military operation that shouldn’t take more than 10 days.
Time to dust off and send a surprising number of 1970s-era jeeps, a single, slightly rusty tank last seen at a 1998 parade, and recalling veterans who, according to their medical records, are mostly just remembering where they left their glasses.
I am actually happy, because it’s great to go cycling and very green, we Belgians would have ruined it. Also, if we would have owned it, pretty sure the westerscheldetunnel would have never been built because we would have spent 20 years debating the budget and politics
We should claim that part and build ugly high-rise buildings along the newly unlocked coastal area!
It’s a part of Flanders that is separated to protect nature.
Why does NL not own belgium
To be fair. The people living in that part are pretty much culturally Flemish anyway.
Because the day we wanted to invade it, there was a general strike from the unions.
Yet…
If we ever decide to invade the Netherlands, that’s where we should start.
Perhaps they won’t even notice.
Well I’m happy it’s still Dutch or that coastline would’ve been filled with ugly boulevards and apartments as well
I don’t live there but their local anthem says:
*”Van d’ Ee tot Hontenisse, van Hulst tot aan Cadzand,
Dat is ons eigen landje, maar deel van Nederland.”*
Feel free to PM me about this. For the 400th birthday of the passing of Maurits of Orange on April 23, 1625, I created a podcast series about his activities in Flanders.
I’m from Flanders and the others were from the Netherlands (from the Dutch part of Flanders). We talked about the Battle of Nieuwpoort and just about any place in the northern part of Flanders we eventually lost to the Dutch.
The podcast is in Dutch and it takes exactly 4 hours of your time. You can find a QR code that guides you to Spotify on the website of the ‘Museum Het Bolwerk’.
The Belgian government actually wanted to annex it several times, but never managed to do so. The first time was during the Belgian Revolution, but they only managed to capture Hulst and surrounding areas. Hulst was later ceded back to NL because provincial borders were used to define the territory of the new country of Belgium.
The second time was in 1850, when crown prince Leopold II made a plan to invade the Netherlands and annex Zeelandic Flanders (the encircled bit of land), North Brabant and Dutch Limburg. He also wanted to completely annex Luxembourg. The plan was called off mainly because France didn’t support it.
The third time was after WWI. The Belgian government claimed that the Netherlands collaborated with Germany (despite giving refuge to over a million Belgians who fled from the war) and wanted to annex Zeelandic Flanders and Dutch Limburg as a form of reparations. They took the plan to Versailles, thinking the Entente would agree, but only France wanted to listen. The dispute was eventually settled with new agreements between NL and BE about usage of the Meuse and Scheldt rivers.
After WWII there was a small, non-violent seperatist movement. The region was cut off from the rest of the Netherlands and the boat connection was severely damaged during the war, which meant that it took a long time for aid to reach the area. Some people felt neglected and wanted to join Belgium as they saw the quick rebuild across the border while little progress was being made in ZF. No plans for a post-WWII annexation were ever on the table. The Belgian government didn’t really see it as a priority anymore and the US aimed for better relations between the Low Countries. The seperatist movement also never gained enough traction.
Edit: Went into a bit more detail about the post-WWI plan

Omdat ze daar raar spreken
We should claim it! It was promised to us 3000 years ago!
Wait until Liesebetheke the great will make Alexander be renamed to the small.
Because the Dutch poldered it in – there was mainly drowned wetlands there before.
