Despite the recent announcement from the regional governor suggesting that Graz would be withdrawing from hosting Eurovision 2026, it now seems that the city remains in the running.
On June 10, a devastating tragedy struck Graz when a 21-year-old gunman opened fire in a local school, killing nine people. Following the incident, an immediate announcement was made regarding the city’s withdrawal from the host city race. However, according to sources within the local administration, no official decision has yet been made. Some voices are even arguing that hosting Eurovision could serve as a symbol of hope and recovery for the city.
Hosting Eurovision presents a major economic opportunity for any host city. According to EBU figures, the Grand Final in Basel drew 166 million viewers and generated approximately €60 million. Beyond the financial impact, Eurovision is a powerful cultural and social event that promotes diversity and strengthens a country’s international image. In the case of Graz, the contest could also send a message of stability and resilience after what many have called “the darkest day in the city’s history”, turning the event into both a celebration and a vehicle for healing.
The Remaining Candidate Cities: A Four-Way Battle for Eurovision 2026
Five cities remain in contention, with their final hosting proposals due by July 4. The official announcement of the host city is expected on August 8, 2025.
Vienna: Austria’s capital, with the iconic Wiener Stadthalle (previously used for Eurovision 2015) offers excellent transport links and accommodation, making it the frontrunner.
Graz: Austria’s second-largest city and capital of Styria, known for its cultural richness and modern infrastructure.
Innsbruck: Capital of Tyrol, famous for hosting the Winter Olympics, combines Alpine beauty with top-tier sports and cultural venues.
Linz & Wels (Joint Bid): Two neighbouring cities in Upper Austria are joining forces, highlighting their complementary infrastructure, large arenas, hotel capacity, and efficient transportation.
St. Pölten: Capital of Lower Austria, investing in modern concert halls and functional urban planning for a fresh and efficient hosting experience.
The Grand Final of Eurovision 2026 is expected to take place on either May 16 or May 23, with the exact date to be confirmed alongside the host city announcement on August 8, 2025.
Will Eurovision return to the host country’s capital for the first time in eight years, or will tradition favour a smaller city once again?
