SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Two more Utah residents have been diagnosed with measles — bringing the state total to 3.

The first case was reported in early June, when an infected traveler passed through the Salt Lake City airport.

On June 24, the Utah Department of Health and Human Services announced two more cases: one from Utah County and the other from the southwest health district.

“They are unvaccinated and not linked to each other,” DHHS said in a press release.

Public health investigators are reportedly working to identify any locations where possible exposures may have occurred.

Measles symptoms

Measles symptoms usually appear one to two weeks after exposure, DHHS said.

Symptoms may include a high fever, cough, runny nose, or red eyes. A rash may also appear after four days of fever.

“If you have been exposed to measles and develop symptoms, you should stay away from others and call your healthcare provider,” DHHS said. “Call first before you go to a clinic or hospital to prevent other people from exposure.”

DHHS also said the most effective prevention against measles is vaccination.

“The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is 97% effective against measles when the person gets 2 doses,” DHHS said.
