She Prioritized Hedge Funds Over People

so Puerto Rico had a debt crisis in 2017 your clients had bought a series of bonds and held quite a lot of money in bonds if I’m correct and it’s $1.4 billion dollars does that sound right yes Senator of course other people had bought bonds too normal people everyday people had had bought bonds and when the debt crisis kicked off the courts froze all of the assets all of Puerto Rico’s assets to make sure that everybody got their fair share and was paid out in accordance with the law and that normal people who bought bonds would get their fair share right i’ve got it right so far yes Senator so you however you on behalf of your clients you invented a novel claim you filed a lawsuit under the takings clause is that right that’s correct Senator so you you argued that the government was stealing from the hedge funds by freezing all of the funds and if they pursued that that course of action and didn’t give your clients all of their money first then they would have violated the US Constitution is that right that’s not quite correct Senator why Why was it a good idea wh why why represent all of these hedge funds trying to get billions of dollars out of Puerto Rico when other everyday bond holders are left to pick up the slack you drag this thing out for years i mean you went back and forth to the circuit court other hedge funds then followed your lead they thought that that was terrific terrific argument super inventive so then they did the same thing so then other hedge funds piled in the bankruptcy went on and on puerto Rico was forced to institute serious austerity measures much to the detriment of their citizens average people who don’t have money for hedge funds why why was why is it a good idea to to go to Puerto Rico and and to try to get your rich clients prioritized over normal people in a way that seriously impoverished if I might say the citizens of the island

Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) confronts federal judge nominee Sparkle Sooknanan over her past legal work representing hedge funds during Puerto Rico’s 2017 debt crisis. Hawley questions why she fought to prioritize billionaires over everyday bondholders, accusing her of inventing a novel legal theory that worsened austerity for Puerto Rican citizens.

  1. The Hedge fund people have to be the lowest kind of human beings, to take advantage of Puerto Rico, when they were so financially vulnerable. An absolute disgrace!!

  2. Because im a lawyer and if i agree to help a client our rules of ethics specify that i am to do my very best. If my theories are incorrect they will be unenforceable. You dont have to like my clients.

  3. I don't understand how giving preference to one group of investors over another is Constitutional.

Now, if tying up the courts with the lawsuit and appeals resulted in the courts settling in the hedge fund's favor by cheating everyone else, I understand.

Lawsuits and the appeal process have literally lasted so long in some cases that people have died waiting.

In other words, those who have the wealth tend to win, in the long run. Even if they lose (i.e. inventor of the intermittent wiper blades and Microsoft), they have made more than the settlement or fine.

Just remember, we ALL will stand before God on Judgment Day!

  4. The point he missed is that when governments grossly overspend and can't pay the citizens suffer. Punish yourself as well as her senator

  5. That’s not a valid argument, unless I’m missing something. Expecting someone not to protect themselves legally is unreasonable; they must take steps to safeguard their own interests and the money of their clients. While the situation is unfortunate for the people involved, it is the government’s fault for mishandling the country’s funds, not the hedge funds. I don’t see how this is relevant.

  6. Yeah ya! We know how this works, but it's great to hear a senator bring the 'rich get richer' scheme to the forefront. Thank you.

  7. Bc there able to afford this type of service with fine line corruption it’s how the deep state has such control over courts and judges now it’s become a system of failure

  8. Senator Hawley thank God we got common sense politician like you who advocate on behalf of the low and middle class American citizens.
We can't thank you enough Senator Hawley your moral compass is keeping you on that narrow path of God's righteousness.
I will vote for you Senator Hawley should you run for US President.
We know we feel we see that you are a man of God.

  9. Wake me up when Hawley actually starts to care about the people of Puerto Rico. PR has 7 times the population of WY and no representation. It also labors under the Jones Act, which is why everything is so expensive in PR.

And Hawley, who bravely ran away on J6, couldn't bring himself to vote to convict Trump at his second impeachment.

  10. Boo-frigging-hoo, Hawley……Puerto Rico created their own mess thru inept government, corruption, reckless spending and mismanagement. Good for the hedge funds, getting their money back and not getting stiffed by the court. The “austerity measures” Hawley references translate to “they had to live within their means and stop spending money they don’t have…..”.

  11. He likes to expose, but nothing ever happens after that. So my question is, why does he even do it? Rich fuck over the poor in broad daylight yet nothing ever happens. So what's the point of these?

  12. The answer is because she had a legal obligation to do so. US and UK law states that the shareholders have first call on all of the income assets and investments from any company or organisation after the tax man. It is her legal obligation to make sure that the shareholders get the maximum amount of money that their entitle to therefore legally she must follow all legal avenues to do that and that's exactly what she did. If she didn't then she could be sued by the hedge fund. Obviously the thing to do is to change the law but he's not going to do that. So he's just grandstanding.

  13. Please EXPLAIN and DEFINE: “their fair share” because as far as I can determine that DOES NOT EXIST because there is no fair share.

  14. Please help us with our local government. It is just horrible, they are a bunch of thieves and don't do anything for us. We are slowly turning into a third world country even though we are a U.S. territory. And they keep getting richer.
