Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams has projected a slowdown in economic growth and a rise in inflation for the year, largely attributing these changes to the impact of trade tariffs. According to Reuters, Williams shared these insights during a speech at the NY CREATES Albany NanoTech Complex in Albany, New York.
Williams indicated that he anticipates economic growth to decelerate to approximately 1%, with the unemployment rate expected to increase from 4.2% to 4.5% by the end of the year. Inflation is predicted to rise to 3% as a result of President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which are expected to drive up prices before gradually returning to the 2% target over the next two years.
The recent Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting maintained the overnight target rate range between 4.25% and 4.5%, as officials navigate the complexities introduced by the current trade policies. The meeting also projected two rate cuts this year, with some Fed officials expressing that the tariffs might lead to a temporary spike in inflation, indicating a willingness to consider rate reductions in the upcoming July FOMC meeting.
Williams refrained from providing specific forward-looking guidance on rate policy, emphasizing that the current monetary policy stance is suitable for achieving the Fed’s employment and price stability goals. He noted that the U.S. economy remains robust based on hard data, while softer data suggests potential weaknesses. Williams expressed appreciation for data indicating modest expected inflation.
