Hello everyone, exploring an opportunity with a big4 in Lux. Coming over from the USA (Boston). Pretty well paid on the USA side, trying to figure out how rough the taxes are in Lux.

I found this with a bit of google: https://lu.talent.com/en/tax-calculator?salary=50000&from=year&region=Luxembourg

At my projected I would be looking at high 30 (almost 40) % tax. Is that realistic? Are there any standard deductions that lower the tax burden?

I’m trying to get some solid figures together for my contact negotiation and if I settle for 85k Euro base (About equivalent to my current USA salary) what is the cost of living going to be like.

I am renting here in Boston at about 2k USD per month (buying is out of the question without dual incomes), maybe looking at doing 2k Euro a month (including charges). I was looking at 2BRs but I am thinking I will have to go down to a 1BR to keep the same standard that I have here in Boston.

Would greatly appreciate any insights anyone has. Pretty excited to spend some time in Europe again.

** Edit: USA Citizen, will most likely be living in the city. Not sure on the visa situation.

  1. >Is that realistic?

It looks about right. If you think it’s too much, try checking Germany and remember that there you have to pay for (very expensive) public transportation. Now that is scary! 🙁

In any case… Back you your questions: it depends. 🙂

If you look far enough there are interesting options even with 3 bedrooms for under €2k, but then you most likely also need a car.

For electricity, worst case scenario should be ~€40.

Internet: [vo.lu](https://vo.lu) has great quality and their most cost-effective plan is €50, but you can find cheaper options. Be sure to check if the place you decide to rent already has fiber!

Groceries: for one person €300 should be enough. This was my last 12 months average having my gf living with me for 6 months and I buy whatever I want, mostly don’t care about prices.

If you are an EU citizen you can always live in Germany but take the comute time into consideration! Also there you basically must learn German to live decently while in Lux english gets you pretty far. Internet there is also much worse (mostly Cable and DSL, very slow uploads, fiber is pretty rare).

  2. With that salary, if you’re single and no kids you’ll be looking at around 4.6k net per month I think. You can play around with the following website, it is accurate enough to give you an idea: https://www.calculatrice.lu/calculatrice/en

If you have a leasing car in the package you’ll pay a bit more taxes depending on the fuel of the car (petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric) and the CO2 emissions, because it will be considered as if it was an extra amount in your monthly salary.

With 2k you’ll certainly find a two bedroom apartment, unless you have something specific in mind when you talk about the standard you want to keep.

Other than that things are expensive here for sure but you’ll be absolutely fine with that salary, unless again you are expecting to live a high end luxury life or something that you might’ve heard about Luxembourg.
