ELOY, AZ (AZFamily) — Dozens of passionate protesters gathered outside the Eloy Detention Center, challenging recent Department of Homeland Security (DHS) immigration enforcement efforts.
The demonstration highlighted the human impact of current immigration policies, with protesters emphasizing that many detainees have no criminal records. Recent data reveals that of 56,000 immigrants in custody nationwide, less than 30% have criminal convictions.
Protesters, many from immigrant families themselves, held signs and chanted in solidarity. “People are coming here to live a better reality,” one demonstrator said. “We need to remind ourselves that this issue is about humanity.”
The Eloy Detention Center stands out as one of the country’s top facilities for immigrant detentions by ICE.
This comes as DHS Secretary Kristi Noem recently announced plans to expand detention facilities, with over 5,000 immigrants detained in just two weeks at the beginning of June.
