When yanks talk about “British people”

  1. This can also be true of Brits themselves. Whenever I hear people saying how good British public transport is, I know they’re not talking about Cornwall

  2. If an American talks about something not from London or not posh, I’m shocked

  3. Correct me if I’m wrong. It the only bit of the UK that matters is London and the south east.

  4. To be fair, there are also people here who talk about America when they mostly mean just California, and by California mostly mean just Los Angeles + Silicon Valley

  5. Being born in Northumberland but raised in Belgravia, I support this message!

  6. It’s always the “Brits in England”.

    Never the English in Britain.

    Or the Brits in Britain…

  7. Or anyone when talking about the “south” of England. It’s always London and it’s surrounding areas

  8. Londoners…… Be honest
    Cockneys……. Be honest
    White Cockneys…. Thank you

  9. To be fair, this happens with pretty much every country. America seems to be the exception where they expect foreigners to know the difference between their states.

  10. As an American who’s just passing by and who just returned from the north of England I actually think most of us think of people like the townsfolk from Hot Fuzz when we think of British people. Well without the murdering… probably.

  11. Not even. They mean Bert the Chim-mer-ney Sweep and Mr Banks. So, parody Edwardian London at best.

  12. That’s so funny you think Americans understand the difference.

  13. Too right mate, I’m from near round Newcastle and it does my head in when yanks talk about Southies and end up looping us all in with them.

  14. I once had several (presumably American) people try to convince me a “British” accent and a “Scottish” accent were two very specific and completely different things.

When I explained that Scotland was part of Britain, one of them even said “I didn’t come online to learn today” as if that’s some kind of gotcha.

  15. Honestly I think this applies to most British people too. The south is either London or Cornwall.

  16. To be fair the standard response to “I went to [any place in England other than London]” is usually “why would you want to go THERE?” I think seeing us only as London is doing us a favour in terms of reputation.

  17. If they were talking about Londoners they’d all be brown
