The Sunshine Coast is once again buzzing with excitement as Air New Zealand returns to Sunshine Coast Airport, marking the start of its seasonal service from Auckland.
This partnership, now in its 12th year, brings new opportunities for both Kiwi tourists and Sunshine Coast locals, enhancing the region’s growing tourism and travel networks. The direct flights will operate three times a week – Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays – offering more than 17,000 seats until October 24, connecting Auckland with one of Australia’s most beloved holiday destinations.
For New Zealanders, this service offers a chance to escape the cooler winter months and bask in the Sunshine Coast’s pleasant climate. The region’s annual winter events, like the Curated Plate food festival and the Australian Wearable Art Festival, continue to be major draws, showcasing the area’s unique local culture and natural beauty. The direct flights make it easier for Kiwis to enjoy these events, along with the region’s stunning beaches and vibrant communities.
On the other side, Sunshine Coast locals now have an easier route to experience New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural offerings. Air New Zealand’s international connections through Auckland provide seamless access to the North Island’s wineries, South Island’s mountain ranges, and the country’s exciting food and wine scene. The added convenience of a direct flight means it’s never been simpler to visit New Zealand for a holiday or a family visit.
Chris Mills, the CEO of Sunshine Coast Airport (SCA), celebrated the airline’s return, highlighting its importance to the region. “This partnership with Air New Zealand is a vital link for thousands of people every year. The return of this service will not only make it easier for Kiwis to visit the Sunshine Coast, but it also strengthens the connection between our two regions,” said Mills.
He added that the seasonal flights directly contribute to the region’s tourism, especially as more than 90,000 New Zealand visitors make their way to the Sunshine Coast each year. These flights, which operate directly to Auckland, also open up pathways to explore other international destinations, thanks to Auckland’s extensive global connections to places like North America and Asia.
Air New Zealand General Manager for Australia, Kathryn O’Brien, expressed excitement about reconnecting the two popular travel destinations. “The Sunshine Coast has long been a favorite spot for Kiwis looking to relax in the sun, and the ease of flying direct from Auckland makes it even more appealing. We are proud to offer Kiwis this convenient option, allowing them to easily enjoy all that this beautiful region has to offer,” said O’Brien.
Air New Zealand’s return also offers Sunshine Coast locals a unique opportunity. O’Brien further added, “This service not only serves leisure travelers but also makes it easier for those visiting family and friends in New Zealand, connecting both countries through this convenient and enjoyable flight service.”
Matt Stoeckel, CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the enduring connection between New Zealand and the Sunshine Coast. “This service is crucial for our region’s tourism industry, and with direct flights to Auckland, it’s easier than ever for our Kiwi visitors to experience the best of what the Sunshine Coast has to offer, from pristine beaches to incredible local events.”
New Zealand continues to be one of the most significant international markets for the region, and the seasonal flights serve to foster greater economic and cultural ties between the two nations. Stoeckel remarked that the Sunshine Coast remains an attractive destination for New Zealanders looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure, with events like the Australian Wearable Art Festival continuing to captivate travelers.
Sharon Raguse, CEO of Tourism Noosa, also shared her excitement about the service’s return. “Noosa has always had strong ties with New Zealand, and with Air New Zealand bringing more Kiwis to the region, we’re excited to welcome them back,” Raguse said. “The Sunshine Coast offers a unique winter escape for our friends from across the Tasman, and we can’t wait to show them everything Noosa has to offer.”
This partnership also brings significant economic benefits, with New Zealand visitors contributing substantially to the local economy. In the year leading to December 2024, 29,000 Kiwis visited Noosa, spending nearly $37 million in the process. This reflects the strong cultural and tourism ties between the Sunshine Coast and New Zealand, which are bolstered further by these direct flights.
With Air New Zealand’s return to the Sunshine Coast, locals and tourists alike are in for a season of rich cultural exchanges and unforgettable experiences. Whether it’s exploring the scenic beauty of New Zealand or enjoying the Sunshine Coast’s sun-filled winter, the flights provide both regions with an exciting opportunity to build on their already strong connection.
The seasonal service between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast is a testament to the ongoing collaboration between the two destinations, bringing more visitors, more cultural exchanges, and more memorable adventures for all who fly.
