Some changes are coming to the Slater School District’s athletic programs as some Malta Bend Tigers have the chance to represent the purple and gold thanks to a sports co-op approved by the Board of Education on Tuesday, June 24.

Malta Bend previously had a co-op with Sweet Springs for various varsity athletics. Slater Superintendent Dr. Terry Lorenz says both school districts decided to enter into this new co-op because it felt like a “good fit” for everyone involved.

Lorenz did note the co-op does not include Slater’s track team.

The Board of Education also voted to suspend the Junior High softball season for the 2025-2026 school year due to low participation. The board did vote to approve a girls golf program in the fall. The board then tabled a discussion to establish a shooting sports team. Lorenz says the board will continue discussions during its July board meeting.
