  3. His plan is to freeze the rents on rent-stabilized apartments and city owned apartments. He plans to do this with small tax hikes. Like a 2% tax on people making over 1M.

    City owned grocery stores in food desert areas, free buses, and free school lunches even in colleges.

    This is is the change we’ve needed for so long. No wonder he won the primary. To top it all off we have a public figure who has stated Israel is committing genocide. It’s a shame he cannot run for president.

  5. I’m excited for this guy, but pls god no. Rent control is almost always a terrible policy. The only people it is good for are current renters in the affected units. For everyone else, rich and poor, rent control acts as a bottleneck on the supply of prospective builders who dont want their buildings subjected to rent control and an increase in demand for renters seeking rent-controlled properties — both of which lead to increases in rental prices.

    If you want to address absurd rental prices, build more housing. Please don’t do this.

    Edit: as a commenter below pointed out, looks like I’m speaking off topic. This seems to be rent control for city-owned buildings only, which afaik, would just be the city setting its own rent prices. I don’t think what I’ve said applies. I’ll leave the comment in case it provides clarity for anyone else or someone comes along to explain why I’m wrong again.

  15. Rent control is bad. This is like trying to control the price of goods.

    You can’t artificially control these types of things without huge negative consequences. It’s been tried before repeatedly. There are countless failed examples. It never works.

    The government needs to produce real solutions. They need to invest, repair, replace, subsidize, stimulate, etc… not “control”.

    You can’t declare a better economy with a law.

  24. Just reacting to title of post. If accurate, how do you go from rent freeze to shooting the rich? It makes no one sense. Just another reason I’m not a fan of Jim Cramer. CNBC does have some good shows like Make It. Cramer is trash and doesn’t elevate the conversation. Maybe that’s why they use him?

  38. a little extreme but property owners who rent to people or rent out where the Mayor will put his socialist grocery stores and not pay the building owner rent, that is concerning.
