Found myself on a tube with no lights this morning, lived in London for 9 years and have never seen this happen

  1. I’ve been living in London for nearly two years and I have definitely seen this happen

  2. I believe this happens more on lines where old rolling stock are in service like the Picadilly line and the Bakerloo.

It’s something to do with the power collection shoes (the parts of the train where it gets its electric). I’ve only witnessed full on black outs a couple times in my life though.

  3. Very dangerous. Especially in empty areas like yours.

  4. Light tripped out. Tell the driver next time, literally one button. Often what happens is a train has a fault so you trip out the lights when running empty to the depot so passengers don’t try to board, but during the summer it stays light late and the fault gets fixed without anyone noticing the lights are off (because the depot is in the open). Then the next day someone takes the train out of the depot during the morning and doesn’t notice the lights are out and enters service with the off.

The problem with the 73 stock is a light on the CDU (the dashboard on the opposite side to the driver) comes on when the lights are off but there’s normally an identical light next to it that’s always on telling you the heating and air vents are active. But in the summer you often find the heating has come on early in the morning so you cut it out (because you know it will be roasting in a few hours) and then you have no light so when the lights out light comes on it looks normal!

  5. It’s happened a few times when I’ve been on the tube, over many years that is, so not often. Sometimes just in one carriage

  6. I’ve had it happen on my regular commute on Jubilee line a couple of times but I’ve also had it happen on Bakerloo and Picc lines.

  7. Rumour is, when the light comes back, six people are missing every time.

  8. So should have had “Waaaaaa.. I feel good” cued up on your phone to make people sht themselves lolol

  9. Happened to me a few times, but usually for a short while. On another note, I really wish they dimmed the lights, especially at night.

  10. Subtlety change seat between every stop to confuse people.

  11. I love it when this happens. It’s so calming. Normal tube lights are way too harsh and bright 😉

  12. That’s normal occurrence on the Bakerloo line

  13. It happens and it feels great when it does. But it never lasts. Would be great to get a little shut eye.

  14. Are they trying to save money on the electric bill??

  15. Bakerloo like used to always do this around queens park

  16. Victoria line by any chance? I was visiting the other day and the lights cut out like this and restarted three times near Seven Sisters.

  17. It’s a metaphor for London’s future. It’s to get us comfortable with the dystopia that’s coming.

  18. Did anyone do the “ooohhhh” ghost sound? I know I would.

  19. I would have let the driver know. I feel like I would get motion sickness lol
