INFO:
- It took me 5 months (2 of which unemployed) to find a new job in Switzerland.
- I have a Bachelor of Science
- Only 2 years of experience
- I have been fired
- I searched in the entirety of the German-speaking part of Switzerland
Most of the "Open" positions that come directly after the application are probably ghosting.
From the feedback that I got, my low experience was the main let down.
In one second Interview I've been told there were only two candidates remaining and they choose the other candidate because he already did his apprenticeship there (meaning that I was a very good candidate and it came down to that small detail).
Feel free to ask me questions!

Thats tuff gang.
35 applications over 5 months feels a little low. I pump that out in a month, is your job so specific?
congrats. 🎉 Seven months and just one interview so far here
To add to the Applications / Interview Ratio: when I was still working i applied to 11 jobs and got 5 Interviews (4 of them went to a 2nd Interview). I don’t know why it was that “successful” in the beginning, maybe because I was not showing up as “unemployed”? Or maybe because I applied to my favorite / best matching places in the beginning?
Congratulations on the job!! Would be interesting to know what exactly you were applying for?
btw do you hold german or swiss passport?
What job? Which sector?
Well, you’re definitely doing better than me. I have sent 35 applications so far in the last month I’ve been searching, all that I am qualified for and have the experience for.
I got rejected for most of them.
Of course, it doesn’t help that I don’t speak German (yet!) well enough, nor that I am not in switzerland yet.
Congrats on the new job my man!
The unemployment office was fine with you applying only 7 times a month? How did you pull that off? I thought the minimum allowed was 5 times a week.
what languages do you speak, what was your desired role?
Are you hired now?
Which industry?
I find it interesting that there was a lot of complaints about the tech industry here in the last months. I also saw this first hand.
Then again, we have NZZ writing that it is booming in Zurich right now… https://www.nzz.ch/wirtschaft/google-open-ai-anthropic-spitzenloehne-fuer-berufseinsteiger-in-zuerich-ld.1889241
Maybe worth a separate discussion for visibility purposes.
Is it that hard to get a job in Switzerland? I’ve been looking for a job in Switzerland (EU Citizen) for a month now but I don’t spam and I’ve sent 3 CVs but the more I browse reddit the more difficult it seems than I thought.
In my case, after 9 months, 400 personalized applications with help from RAV and various course leads, we are all stumped.
– Master of Wood Technology, Good german, 7 years of experience in practically every branch.
Result – 2 phone interviews then one ghosted one refused. 1 passed until the face to face talk. Ghosted afterwards.
Market is busted.
EDIT: I am not a swiss citizen(expat). Might have something to do with it, might not. I dont have a high asking price but i do have a bottom line under which is not profitable for me to stay(family support).
Not once was I asked about the desired paycheck.
Why were you fired if I may ask? Just curious
Do you have swiss degree? If yes where if I may know?
Wow a job after only 34 applications, impressive! I sent well over a hundred and got immediate rejections for ~90%
Electronics technician here. Been fired in March. 8 applications, 4 off them rejected, 2 x first interview, 2 x second interview and job offer. So it took me 3 months for a job i love. If I would applicate for jobs whereI just would work and not like so much, i would had it faster. When you have the skill and they see it, you would get a job in IT or electronics pretty fast.
Wow, great fluffer chart
Seriously? 35 over five months? I did 10 per day when I was looking for a job. You should try everything, even if you’re not qualified. If they invite you for an interview, it gives you priceless experience—learning how to talk, respond, and communicate.
Kinda similar to me but sent ~50 applications
I hat that ghosting seems to have become more common nowadays.
Dear HR, if you post a job opening and receive a qualified application, invest those 5 seconds for the standard rejection mail.
Why is it a journey?
That’s crazy, my experience in tech has been very different.
35 applications? Son, people are doing this in one day. You are lucky you got job out of little effort you invested in the process.
How diverse where the jobs you applied to ?
As a nurse i wrote 20 and got 18 offers.
I have been unemployed since September.
Happy that I never had such a struggle. Hope you all find a job you like and want to spend your time with it 🙂
