This could be avoided if Britain would just use some variation of detailed voting. RCV, approval, etc. Most of them at least significantly decrease the impact of the “spoiler” effect.
Incidentally I think one of the simplest and best ideas is overlooked, it’s Condorcet with only two rank spaces, either RP or KY or Nanson or Schulze. This is simpler from the voter perspective than making lots of choices, definitely simpler than RCV and comparable to approval. It eliminates the RCV “mistake” of trying to fill in all the blanks and giving free spots to well-known candidates. It eliminates the issues Condorcet methods can have with burying and reduces the susceptibility to cloning (which anyway is rare). It doesn’t punish moderates like IRV. It does run into problems when there are a large number of candidates (more than about six) but the political conversation can barely tolerate this anyway.
Maybe Starmer should try some social democratic economic policies. You know, like some kind of social democrat party.
Starmer has been a huge disappointment. I constantly have to remind myself it’s Labour in power and now the Tories!
